The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

As always more is being read into this than are the actual facts. I got the flag made up in our first year of being formed, I chose the Ensign as, at the time there was only one regiment in the UKCM and that was Homers Hero’s which is an English regiment. Our flag has three patches on it, the UKCM Lion, Homers Hero’s and the Airborne. This is no dig at any other regiment as, at the time I had the flag made they were either not formed or in their early formation.

As for the Union Jack, I have had one available and with me every year.. in fact I left one with Derek for safe keeping just in case. We have never flown it because either there were no poles available or nobody wanted to carry it!

Fact is this... I chose to fly the Ensign as I see it as the original UKCM flag from the first year that it was formed and therefore are the colours of the UKCM. I have no problem with flying the Union Jack as well BUT we have never has the chance of flying both... one which I hope will be sorted in 2012 if there is space, bearers etc.

Sorry to burst the bubble of nationalistic narcissism but “thems the facts” :D

When you say "nobody" wanted to... was it specifically being in the colour party or carrying the Union flag?

For the first couple of years it was mainly the fact we had no members in either service c or dress uniforms, we always felt we were "letting the side down" and tarnishing the display of all the effort you guys put in.

Now it is more down to we feel that the UKCM should only have one flag... and that flag should be our colours as opposed to the Union Jack. I am happy to change this policy is those attending wish otherwise OR the colour party can accommodate two (or even three) flags from the UKCM... but then we do get into the whole UK / English / Scottish argument best left for the bar 8)

"At the time". And now there are more regiments I feel that they should be represented as well.

I don't think there needs to be multiple guidons. The USCM guidon is fine as is. All other groups are offshoots of that. As Hunterkiller said it's about representing the countries that make up the costuming group hence why the UKCM, being from the United Kingdom, should fly the Union Flag.

Having read Bruce's explanation of the history and evolution of the UKCM Ensign and the fact that it has been carried from the outset I think it should continue to be used whether alone or alongside the Union Flag.

If we adopt Dom's view that the Ensign is the equivalent of the USCM Guidon then there is no reason both cannot be flown together. If anyone is still "offended" by the presence of the Homers Heroes Patch on the flag then there are a few options one is to replace the Airborne and Lion patches with the insignia for the Hadrians Wall Crew and HMS Valhalla. However this would, IMHO, require the agreement of originators of the Flag and would also preclude the addition of further Regiments insignia should any more be formed in the future. Or you could add the other Regiments insignia in the same quarter (canton) of the flag as Homers Heroes insignia. After all National Flags evolve over the years (48 Star Old Glory or Early Union Flag minus St Patricks Cross anyone?) so why not the UKCM Ensign?

As for the USCM Guidon being flown Front and Centre with all National Flags behind it I think that would be in breech of the rules specified by the Flag Code although how rigorously these are applied and whether they actually constitute law or just convention on US soil I am not in a position to comment.

Just some food for thought. :delta:

I wasn't aware of the Flag Code. Those Americans have rules for everything! ;) In that case, the US flag at the front and USCM flag taking precedence over the country flags by being flown on the right of all the others.

If we start flying the White Ensign and the Union Jack, and then the US flag and the USCM Guidon then really all countries should have a guidon of sorts and we'll all end up with flags. FLAG PARTY!!! ;)

The only reason I keep banging on about having the Union Jack is that it's so instantly recognisable. I don't hate the Ensign, I just think that it's misplaced. I've always thought that but just never said anything.

And on that note, I think I'm going to stop flogging this dead horse.

There's no issue with the guidon and ensign being flown at the center of the Canadian, British, French and Japanese flags... so long as the American flag is front and center (in the USA of course). In a parade in the US, the flag being honoured is its own country's. All others should take precedence roughly based on how many members of the individual CM group there is: UK, Canada, France and Japan.

Got no problem from me there Dom.

When in Rome do what the Romans do!!!

The USA flag should be front centre.
