I tend do have more than one project on the go at once, :wink:
I want to have a go at sculpting a master from Polystyrene, anyone done it ? i'm more interested in what to put on the Polystyrene after i have finished to make it hard ( so i might be able to make a mould )

Any tips would be welcome ...

For clone armor vac-forming we used polystyrene and then used wall putty (spackle) to create the shell.
We pulled one set of armor from those polystyrene molds and then poured hydrocal (soft concrete) into that and cleaned those up for more permanent molds.

The polystyrene didn't hold up very well the first time, but it was only supposed to last once.
Whatever you cover it with...bare in mind you're still going to have a soft core.

If you decide on this method PLEASE test the resin you're using first on a small waste piece of Polystyrene as some resins could potentially just dissolve your lovingly created master! :shock:

It depends on the resin. Most Urethane Resins heat up A LOT while they cure, so they can melt away the Polystyrene. There are some low temp resins, or you can use Spackle, Fiberglass (which is resin, so also heats up a lot), Plaster, or even Bondo to cover it for a one off vaccing.

I have been doing some reading up on other forums , someone has suggested coating the Polystyrene with Latex then coating with resin / Fibreglass ? would that work ? :?

well i would be sculpting a shroud so it would not have any fine detail on it , once i get back ( I'm on Holiday in Germany at the mo . 8) ) i'll be looking at buying some Polystrene and having a go at sculpting ..
