The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Not sure if this should be here or on the Ready Line but figure the mods can move it if I've messed up.

My question is - Who owns the copyright to the various images related to the Alien movies? I mean in particular things like the Delta or the Screaming Eagle patch or the rank pins from the first film? The reason I ask is that I've got an idea for something I'd like to do but I don't want to go stepping on any toes and just use images without getting the proper permission first.

I did have a quick search as I remember it being brought up before but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks in advance...

In very broad terms I would think that Fox really owns copyright on them, but chances are wouldn't really act from a legal standpoint as it wouldn't be worth it (unless you were making a LOT of money off them of course).

The other issue is that some folks on here have taken the trouble to re-draw these designs from original patches and the like so it's worth also being aware of that in terms of copyright too if you see what I mean.

Cheers Harry! That's what I thought. Though I guess I didn't really word it properly (the joys of having children demanding attention when you're trying to write a post ;) ). I did mean the re-drawn work.

So basically, if I re-draw what I want myself and I whatever project I use it for doesn't make a profit then I should be OK?

Would the patch designs fall under the 'Alien, Aliens, Alien3' copyright?
I'm guessing they would as FOX wouldn't go to the trouble of copyrighting every individual design.

Patches have been done, redone and redone again over the years from many MANY sources at a profit without a blink of an eye from Fox....I'd say you're safe.

Copyrighting isn't something you "do"... Legally, it's assumed as soon as you create something, and if someone viokates it, you simply need to prove that you created the piece first.

Trademarks need to be registered, though.
