The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

right, new year, new project. always wanted to build a ghostbusters trap so thought that this time, instead of just building a one off and keeping it for myself, i would cast it in resin and sell a small run in kit form. so basically, iv'e just got done building the very rough mock up out of card and plastic card etc to get the sizing and proportions right. think it turned out good so now i'll be moving on to the actual master copy then once thats done and im happy with it ill make the moulds and cast it all. anyway, here are some pics of the ROUGH mock up for now, and i will keep you all up to date with it's progress. if you think you would be interested just let me know so i can get a rough idea of how many i will have to cast. :)

Ive been working on a similar project.

I've been laser cutting mine out or card and was thinking of making them out of acrylic sheet.

All price depending I may be interested in one of yours.

The only problem I have is that yours looks like it was made out of cardboard.

*ducks throw proton pack*

Kidding! kidding!

I don't have a trap yet myself. Are you planning on a single piece, or two part, seperateable (is that even a word...) unit?

haha almost had me there rook!

it wont be just a single piece block of resin. im trying to make it in as few pieces as possible but also allow upgrade and conversion options. so far its looking to be like putting a box together and then adding the smaller details on top of that. left side, right side, base (might included the skateboard bearings too), front, handle, battery compartment, trap doors and front display block. so about 8 pieces all together.

PHEW! been working hard on the master for the last few days. good news is that i was able to order a load of high quality resin at a low price, so that means that i wont have to charge too much per kit! here is a little teaser pic of how that master is going so far. hope you like......

Thanks spat! that's high praise indeed coming from you.

and Geordi im not planning on making the full costume. Maybe, just maybe one day i will give making a screen accurate proton pack a go, but for now 90% of my attention is on USCM stuff. this is just a side project to teach myself mold making and casting etc.

Today i ordered 50 skateboard bearings so i will include 4 of them in each kit alongwith reference photos (and maybe the transfers/stickers too).

The Ghost Traps in the film were done to a chemical compound reaction. Essentially strips of a certain base chemical were glued onto parts of the trap and then the irritator was added right before the roll and would create the smoke. Dry ice might work, but would be messy as anything.

Also, don't forget to post this project over at http://gbprops.com, they're always on the look out for kits which are few an far inbetween in our little Ghostbusters community. Closest thing we have is ordering major parts from different people. No one has anything definative.

Good luck! If I had money you'd be able to put me down for one, but I'm going to have to stick with my wooden one I made.

Nick,

Fantastic work mate,as always.
That your taking up the challange of casting, that`s excellent news also.
Means if we get Sgt Monkey`s headcast we could all have a "treasured piece" for our Aliens collections,to do with as we please :D HAHAHA

Jason

Dry ice wouldn't be messy as such... Just a bugger to get hold of and store, is all!

In fact, I can't think of a LESS messy substance! :)

been doing some more work on it today. everything apart from the battery pack has been made, need to make the molds for the wheel base, handle, bulkhead and battery once the master is made then its just a case of pouring he resin and shipping them out. good news is that i was able to get a bulk order of skateboard bearings in so will include those with the kit.

pics soon :)

ok update time. finished all the master parts and made all the molds so i cast up a prototype and threw some paint on her to see how it looks when completed. im very happy with the way it all fits together and the overall look of the kit :) just placed a big order with a resin supplier and all things being well these kits will be going on sale next week sometime priced £60.

here are some pics of the finished piece....
