So, because my Halloween-crazy American roomate was going home this week and wouldn't be able to celebrate Halloween with us, he organised one of his patented pumpkin-carving parties last Friday, and a measly handful of us showed up with costumes. Now, I'd already shown off the Marine gear last year, so I wanted something different.

Fortunately, I've been reading (and re-reading) The Dresden Files, which are absolutely great, and so I went for the Harry Dresden look. I got myself a black canvas duster, a few accessories, made a couple of bits and pieces from scratch, and abandonned my quest for a wizardy-looking staff in time to get a long broom handle and carve it a bit. Not exactly the first rate stuff the Sarge is pulling off on a regular basis, but hey, it's pretty much my first time, so...

Here are a few pics. Not exactly perfect - my assigned photographer got plastered a lot faster than either of us expected!

Image

General view. Black pants, black shirt, black duster, crappy looking staff. About 10 kilos too heavy, 20 cm too short, and not looking the part of Dresden at all. I know! :P

Image

Pentacle pendant - and it's real silver. 3 new-agey shops in this miserable town, and not ONE had an acceptable pentacle - had to go to an actual jeweller. Pfffft.

Image

My Mighty Runed Staff of +5 Geekery. Hand carved and painted, can you tell?

Image

Showing off the back-up revolver in belt holster - a tiny thing from the 1€ shop. Not quite the .44 Harry eventually adopts here!

And finally probably the only bits I can be reasonably proud of: the Chicago PD 'Consultant' ID, and the business cards. I printed a bunch of those, gave them to everybody at the party with a little: "Harry Dresden, Wizard. If you have any kind of... weird problem, gimme a call!", and showing them the ID if they asked if I was serious. That got a few laughs at least!

Of course, I am happy to report that, as I expected, NOBODY got the name, at all, because no one in Ireland seems to have read the books. 8)

So, what's your Halloween rig this year?

They obviously didn't watch Sky One earlier this year either:

I saw it and enjoyed every minute. 8)

Well, I saw the series and sort of enjoyed it, but there was a lot of work to do on it - and it won't happen since the geniuses who mutilated the show's premiere have since decided to also cancel it. Go go Sci-Fi executives...

Also, Paul Blackthorne isn't bad at all - but I like the books' Dresden better. Proper staff for one thing - not a hockey stick!

They've cancelled it? Bugger. :?

Oh well, at least I'll still have Dexter series 2 to look forward to. 8)

I'm going to have to check this show out!

Looks great Luinsar! Nice to finally put a face to a name as well! :D

Alas... when you change a written property too much it ticks off fans and won't get as much of a following. Dresden Files, Painkiller Jane... etc.

Yeah I will miss Harry.

Cheers Sarge. :D

Check out the show if you want - it's not bad at all, it just never had a chance to mature. But whatever you think of it, don't let that stop you from reading the books - they're different enough that it doesn't do double use, and they're vastly superior in overall quality.

Plus they haven't been cancelled. :P
