So, because my Halloween-crazy American roomate was going home this week and wouldn't be able to celebrate Halloween with us, he organised one of his patented pumpkin-carving parties last Friday, and a measly handful of us showed up with costumes. Now, I'd already shown off the Marine gear last year, so I wanted something different.
Fortunately, I've been reading (and re-reading)
The Dresden Files, which are absolutely great, and so I went for the Harry Dresden look. I got myself a black canvas duster, a few accessories, made a couple of bits and pieces from scratch, and abandonned my quest for a wizardy-looking staff in time to get a long broom handle and carve it a bit. Not exactly the first rate stuff the Sarge is pulling off on a regular basis, but hey, it's pretty much my first time, so...
Here are a few pics. Not exactly perfect - my assigned photographer got plastered a lot faster than either of us expected!
General view. Black pants, black shirt, black duster, crappy looking staff. About 10 kilos too heavy, 20 cm too short, and not looking the part of Dresden at all. I know!
Pentacle pendant - and it's real silver. 3 new-agey shops in this miserable town, and not ONE had an acceptable pentacle - had to go to an actual jeweller. Pfffft.
My Mighty Runed Staff of +5 Geekery. Hand carved and painted, can you tell?
Showing off the back-up revolver in belt holster - a tiny thing from the 1€ shop. Not quite the .44 Harry eventually adopts here!
And finally probably the only bits I can be reasonably proud of: the Chicago PD 'Consultant' ID, and the business cards. I printed a bunch of those, gave them to everybody at the party with a little: "Harry Dresden, Wizard. If you have any kind of... weird problem, gimme a call!", and showing them the ID if they asked if I was serious. That got a few laughs at least!
Of course, I am happy to report that, as I expected, NOBODY got the name, at all, because no one in Ireland seems to have read the books.
So, what's your Halloween rig this year?
