Yes it will play DVDs and (if you have an HDTV and HDMI lead) will 'upscale' the image to fit the HD resolution. The 360 does the same if plugged in via a VGA lead (or an HDMI lead if connected to the latest version 360).

AFAIK it will only play DVDs from the region the console is bought in, but many games are multi-region, but best to check online for individual games, just to make sure.

I have a 360, but I play DVDs on my multi-region Samsung HD870 upscaling DVD player, as it's just easier and gives a better picture.

As a games developer, I'm curious. What is it drawing you to a PS3?

the only reason im going for the p23 is because all the games iv already got for my ps2 will work on it :p

i was gonna get a 360, but Gina wont let me have lots of consoles all lined up in the living room :P

Make sure you get the older version. The one they have just announced is not backwards compatible.

To play DVDs without bothering about the region, use VideoLan player on your PC.

Of course, it might not be conveniently placed in front of the big comfortable couch and with a big screen, but it's better than not watching them at all, innit?

BurntKona,
PS3 has MGS3 and Killzone 2.
But at $600, well....
Here's to hoping for a port. :?

Have you searched the net for multi-region hacks for any of your DVD players?

That is so often the answer I hear, sometimes with an added Gran Turismo.

Killzone 2, you will never see a port of, as I believe they are being published by Sony, and I hope Gureilla up their game to pull up from the standard of the first Killzone. MGS3... who knows, but certainly not within a competitive timeframe.

You have to hand it to Sony that the are able to market a more expensive machine on the promise of things to come, rather than what is already on the table.

Osmotic beat me to the warning about the cheaper 40gb models.

Any chance you fitting a Wii in, too. They are tiny. Not that I'm working on a Wii game, you understand ;)

Sounds cool Jon. If you’re not breaking a NDA could you elaborate ? I’d love to know a little about what’s coming up.

I just ordered a PS3 (the £350 60Gb one, before they run out of them). Hopefully it will arrive on Friday. I got 2 Blu Ray films, Heavenly Sword and Motor Storm in with the price (from Gamestation).

I've heard of loads of people buying them in the last week. The price cut seems to be working.

Thing is, the publishers move slowly.

The success of the Wii has caught the industry on the hop, and so now there are a lot of Wii projects on the go. Conversely, slow initial sales of the PS3 have caused many titles to go multiplatform, switch to 360 or be cancelled altogether. While franchises have an established success to give confidence to the investment of developing a high-def game, a lot of smaller publishers and developers are going to be looking at the numbers of installed Wii units and seeing a much more fertile market.

That's my impression from the trenches. But then I've got friends working at Free Radical on Haze, and Evolution for Motorstorm (which is shaping up well since it moved to PS3 exclusive), who has nothing but praise, and an old lead artist of mine who jumped ship from Sony Soho moaning about it all, to go work for Lucasarts.

I wouldn't want to tell someone else how to spend their money, but just look for the games and/or console system features that YOU want, rather than what other people say is best/what you should buy.

If none of the systems/games 'rings your bell', then hold onto your money for a while longer until one does. :)

Use the money to buy/upgrade a good gamin PC, then wait until January, and then you can play Pirates of the Burning Seas. And you will no longer need to see the sun or talk to other people for real.

Actually, As far as I know, the only model to not have backwards compatability is the newly released 40 Gig model. It also had it's USB inputs cut down to 2. From what I remember, if you want backwards compatibility, there should still be the 60/80 gig models available.
