So I'm going through that Post D-Con syndrome and I think to myself I need a Marine fix. :wink:

So I went out and bought Heartbreak Ridge. :wink:

This got me thinking about films with the USMC. What's everyone's favourites? Which ones were stinkers?

So in no particular order here's mine:

- Full Metal Jacket: Who can forget GySgt Hartman and AnimalMother?

- Jarhead: I hated this movie at first. Now I see it as a complimetary film- a contrast to all the usual shoot-em-up films that Hollywood churns out.

- Born on the Fourth of July. 15 minutes of combat in a 2 1/2 hour film. But a decent performance by Cruise.

- Heartbreak Ridge. A fun movie. Eastwood looks good in Dress Blues. :wink:

- And of course...

ALIENS BABY!!!

So any favourites I haven't mentioned?

CHerie rented Full Metal Jacket and saw it for the first time last night......she loved it!!

Sgt Hartman degrading Pile......it was Dom and Shawn all over again.

Marine movies for me.....boy I can't pin them down.
Aliens of course
Heart Break Ridge was on a few nights ago, didn't see it but the trailer was enough :)

You could go old school and watch John Wayne in The Sands of Iwo Jima, or modern with Flags of Our Fathers. 8)

i am addicted to vietnam war movies right now too. watched Full Metal jacket again the other night then went out and bought Apocylapse Now a few days ago. loved that too. really wanna see Platoon too :)

oh and has anyone here seen R-Point?

The above one`s are indeed all great films.

Don`t forget the Fred Dryer movie "Death before Dishonour".
That was quite an enjoyable film.
Following Marine Recon on Embassy Duties in the MidEast & Terrorism.

Another is "Rules of Engagement". That shows a fair few dress codes,Great story & also questions the RoE for combat. Plus Sam L Jackson & Tommy Lee Jones truely carry their parts VERY well.

I saw Death Before Dishonour back in the late 80s when it first came out. All I can remember is the guy being tortured with the electric drill (or am I remembering another movie?).

Rule of Engagemnet was pretty good too. Interesting how they made Jones and Jackson look "younger" when they have the Vietnam flashback scenes. I had forgotten they were Marines.

It's funny- Heartbreak Ridge came out a year before FMJ (1986). Although the film itself is pretty campy at times, Clint Eastwood's portrayal of GySgt Highway is much like Hartman (with a little less yelling and repeated foul language). Having to whip into shape a bunch of undisciplined Marines, he beats on them, PTs them until they collapse, even says the "Drop your ---ks, and grab your socks" line. :wink:

Not a marine movie, but just saw Transformers again.....and the way they co-ordinate the assault from both the air and ground towards the beginning of the movie.......amazing.

Gives me goose bumps the way our military works nowadays!!

I don't remember if the soldiers in these were USMC or not, but I like them reguardless.

Platoon
Hamburger Hill

And then there's that one with Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn. I wouldn't say that's one of my favorites, but it does have some good moments with Fox's character trying to do the right thing.
