My Gerber mkII arrived today and it's a real beauty:

I would like to make the blade black like the one(s) in the film but I don't want to damage this as it's quite valuable.

Can this be done or should I not bother?

Aren't there (black) resin copies of the Gerber MkII around? Probably by Matsuo.

Ah, sorry Scott. I thought of Matsuo first off as all his stuff is black resin.

Thanks for that; maybe I'll make a cast and create a rubber one as a friend of mine makes casts of items with black rubber.

If you do Dusty, you know who will buy first to buy one off you ;)

No kidding!!!

I'd be in line for one of those!

Even my mock resin Gerber gets the evil eye from convention security ocassionally- a rubber one would be zero hassle methinks.

Not to mention great for re-enacting the "Do The Thing With The Knife" scene! :D

I used cold blue, available at most gunshops. It's a chemical bluing. It will blacken the blade so if you don't want to lose collectability value of the Mk2, then you shouldn't do that. Too late for me. I bought my knife brand new in 1979 pre-Aliens (-7 PA ) and cold blued the blade. The serial number is 069165 which according to this site Gerber Mk2 Date says it was manufactured in 1978. This is next to my Gerber Mk1 bought at the same time (blade also done). That serial number is 075773. I do believe the blades are made from L6 tool steel, which has very little corrosion resistance if at all. Keep your blade lightly oiled. If yours is made from stainless steel, (an "S" in the serial number), disregard the oiling.

Scott's resin knives rock! In face, they are cast from my knife. 8) Would be nice to see Scott make another run. Quality work.
I do believe the screen used Mk2's didn't have the sharpening steel & pouch unless someone can tell me different ~races to watch movie to confirm~
All in all, a nice addition to your collection, Paul.

I've had mine anodized... no damage at all. See for yourself!
