According to my Alien game, which for this thread I say is as canon as any of the films. Only 1 of the 4 engines actually exploded, it was ejected at the last moment because Ripley tried to shut off the destruct. The Nostromo was blown clear but there was a danger it would not be, so the countdown continued.
