The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

This was made in 1965 as a prototype, looks like a Phased Plasma Rifle mated with an AK47.

I like it its funky!

In my description i said 1965! It was a prototype for tank crews.

LOL they had no composites then!

I'd like to see a modern version of this with modern materials. 'it would look cool.

You're telling me plastic wasn't around in 1965? The M16 is in service since 1961 and it's got plastic coming out of the wazoo.

Well yeah... but let's face it, Soviet weapons have never been on the cutting edge of the LCF... they're all ugly as sin.

AH but with most things in life, ugly as sin but very effective.

I think the wood thing is just that it was easier to process the wood than to make plastic in quanity.

Cutting edge? No.

Functional? Yes.

Look at the high failure rate of the M16's issued in the early years of the VietNam war compared to AK's issued in that same time period.

High tech doesn't necessaril mean high function. ;)

I don't think that's wood. I agree it's Bakelite or something similar. Just has dyes swirled in it. So yeah, wood-like look...

Did you ever wonder how they get the rounds out of the magazine? Is the image cut off and missing the rest of the stock? Or does it have a really exotic feeding system?

Cheers,
Stefan

I was going to say, you can see some of the details the P90 and its big brother the P2000 got from.

The eject port is at the bottom between the barrel and the mag, and the ergonomic fore grip.

The P2000 has an over barrel eject port that pushes the cases out the front over and just to the side of the main barrel. The other Korobov prototypes have this system, so you can see this prototype probably has more in common with the FN 'P' series than other bullpups.

well its not quite as exotic as you may think. such rifles are called bull pup rifles. they all have the mag feed from behind the trigger. this allows for a shorter barrel and altogether shorter gun. that in turn allows for a smaller soldier profile. um UK guys doesn the Uk military curretnly uses a bull pup sort of rifle as the standard infantry weapon or am i off base?

I think Bug Stomper was wondering about the mechanics of precisely how a round is taken from the top of the magazine to the chamber...

In an L85, when you strip one down and look inside, as with the FA-MAS and most other bullpups, there is still a good deal of the 'rear end' of the weapon for a bolt to travel back past the magazine and collect a round on it's return journey. That thing has no physical space for the bolt to travel behind the magazine. Weird...
