Actually, in Vista they did get rid of the dog (just tried it to make sure). As far as proprietary hardware, Mac really does have proprietary hardware when you look at the guts of the computer. My guess is that your PC Video card is an ATI, since neither Intel nor Nvidia list Mac drivers on their website (My guess is based on the fact Intel, Nvidia, and ATI are the top three video GPU manufacturers in the world in that order). Don't know how good Lexmark is on Mac support, but both the USB Keyboard and the SATA drive are based on generic standards. To actually discuss compatibility matrixes of those two technologies you have to discuss the SATA controller and the USB Host controller both of which are on the motherboard, generally part of the chipset, and therefore created by Apple or on special contract from Apple.
To give you an example. According to
www.apple.com/macosx/upgr...ments.html there are 18 basic configurations MacOSX will run on (I count a configuration as the group Apple lists them on their webpage). The PC hardware vendor New Egg (
www.newegg.com ) has 19 motherboard chipsets just for the most recent AMD processor socket. In addition they have 8 more processor sockets (each of which should have multiple chipsets (I didn't verify this)) between AMD and Intel processors, and that doesn't include all motherboards chipsets that have a built on processor.
Not trying to argue with you, just pointing out a very common fallacy about Mac OS vs Windows OS. Part of my job is dealing with all the various PC's out there and how our product interacts with them, so I am extremely aware of the stability problems caused by the amount of hardware you can buy. I have had to tell someone "I know the customer just bought half a million dollars worth of our equipment and is about to return it, if you can't get me the computer they are using, I can't get the problem fixed."
BTW, here is a webpage with a lot of Windows HotKeys listed:
