My brother and I grew up on Red Dwarf, which is sort of a "button-hole cousin" to Aliens. So for his 43rd birthday I decided to make him something special. The show opened with a close-up of Lister painting the letters RED DWARF on the side of the ship. We pan out to see how massive the vessel is. I wanted to capture some of that magic as a piece of art.

When I was building the model of the Freya 7 I discovered how useful the innards of old laptops could be for creating spaceship exteriors.

I then scrounged through my junk drawers for bits and pieces to fill in gaps, hide screws, etc.

After a coat of paint it is starting to look the part!

So here it is done and framed. I did a lot of weathering and added a few water slide decals for some extra visual interest.

For a stand-in for Lister I used a tiny Star Wars figure of Baze from Rogue One, with a space helmet made of putty. The scale of the man to the giant F is quite close to the original! This all fits securely in a frame and now hangs on his wall. It was a lot of fun to make!
