The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I've wondered this for a while, why is DCon the 'big' con to the AL?
Any particular reason? Cheaper than SDCC?

I would guess it is easier for people to get tickets to d con rather than sdcc.

I feel a responsibility to go to SDCC one year. But every account I have read or heard makes it sound like everything negative about DCon magnified, with none of the good bits.

I fear that SDCC is just like one of the big UK shows but on a massive scale and with (even more) corporate money, whereas DragonCon is a convention of a sort that rarely happens in the UK on any scale, Nine Worlds being the current (tiny) exception.

And, still, the guests at DCon are relatively accessible: I've managed to snog Wil Wheaton, share a bed with Kaylee, be stalked by Richard Hatch, see Mantoon lose in a drinking competition with Aaron Douglas, and technology pundit Veronica Belmont hurt my ankle three years in a row.

I think it is the closeness. Everything happens at or around the hotels. There is no closing up and everyone going their own way at the end of the day. You are there for 5 days with your friends.

Thanks!

It might be cheaper for UKCM, but (IIRC) we just heard about it on here, Spat told us more when he came over here to the NSC in 2007 and then went to our first one and haven't stopped going. :)

Here's a Flickr group for SDCC:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/sdcc/
Lots of fan costuming and celeb panels/signings.

Here's one of my albums for D*Con(NSFW):
https://www.flickr.com/photos/15456611@ ... 096878574/
Lots of fan costuming, celeb panels/signings, some celebs mingling with fans (including at bars/restaurants), late night drinking/parties, including with some celebs.

Lots of difference.

Outside of DC and other WAY SMALLER fan run cons, I've been to 2 Wizard Worlds. The vendor area is great and all but you were lucky if you could get in on a panel, no stopping when walking past celebrity tables/lines and no fan tables. Just "professional" costumers .

DC will always be superior to me because of the constant fun atmosphere and the people you meet and booze you drink.

SDCC is primary a big merchandise shop.

D*Con has all aspects of a Con. We might do a seep at SDCC, but leading the parade?
IMHO there are lots of aspects especially the “fan meets fan” and the parties where D*con wins over SDCC.

It really depends on what you are looking for.

This is really helpful guys. I've scratched my head about why D*C was the big draw for you all.

Can't lie, I have wondered myself. I have not been in to the "big Con" scene much and I kind of assumed they were all the same. This is good info though and D*Con is only 6 hours from me. Obviously its far too late to try and squeeze it in this year, but its on my "things to do soooooon" list.

*I mean besides the parade. That honor is self-explanatory and sounds like tons of fun

I think there is one description that fits DCon well "Mardi Gras for Nerds"

Nerdi Gras, you mean ;)

I've been to SDCC once...and that was probably good enough.

All the above posted reasons are accurate.

DragonCon is the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup, the World Cup, etc. of our hobby.

It is THE Best Con, period. Is it a pain in the ass to get a hotel room?

It sure is!

When you are at DCon, do you think about how difficult it was to get a room?

Nope, just where are your friends, what are you going to have fun next? It is 4 days and nights STRAIGHT of costumed madness!

Many years ago, a crazy group of Brits and Canadians decided to come take a gander at D*C. Since then, it has become the "Nerd Mecca" for all things CM.

I will say this, having attended both cons for many years, D*C is definately more for costumers and SDCC is all about collectors and Hollywood. It is extremely hard to cosplay at SDCC. D*C has always been set up for those who enjoy costumes and libations.
