Heya,

I'm looking for something like a Sinewinder/Cylon LED strip, where the lights move in patterns:

I know the circuit type exists as I've seen them in little units for cyclists and the like. However, I'm after something that fits within my own design... and powered by a Molex or 5-pin SATA socket.
I'll need custom dimensions, I expect, with a couple of controls to alter the light pattern, speed and probably a basic on/off.

I'm utterly clueless and cack-handed when it comes to electronics and soldering, so does anyone know somewhere/someone (perhaps UK-based?) that could make this for me for a fairly sensible price?

Cheers,
Woody.

A few of the Valleman kits do the chaser thing your after, no idea about all the SATA stuf though :(

Hey Woodmeister I think this might be what you are looking for! ;-)

Remember you can extend the contacts for the LEDs so you can have them where you want them.

Looks like the Velleman only chases. I need it to sweep.
I need a strip of LEDs about 220mm long, 30mm high and with LEDs all along it (approx 20-22 of them). I also require a separate board for the controls, affixed to a PCIe blanking plate, ideally with colour change and pattern cycle controls, undoubtedly with a pre-programmed microcontroller or two. Molex or SATA power is pretty essential.

They exist for cars, but they're way too big for what I need.

So you're doing a fancy PC Case then? ;-)

If I cut one of these things and solder the end up, could that work?

Theoretically I would say yes but it is impossible to say for sure without having one in hand.

Another solution would be to scratchbuild your own custom light display and control it with an Arduino Mini or similar.

I haven't a clue about an Arduino, had to Google it to begin with, have no idea about programming, have ZERO ability to solder any components and would have better success just twisting wires together.
I literally cannot pick up an LED, as I lack that fine motor control.

I'm happy to solder for you mate, you'll have to tell me what needs putting where etc but if your stuck then give me a shout :)

Do you know aught about programming the chips?
I can probably source a PCB, but have very little idea about the rest.

I'm basically looking for something like the (open source) Larson Scanner, but with more LEDs and with the circuit controls on a separate board.

No idea sorry mate.
Try James Bruton on the RPF he's an electronics wiz, he should be able to help out.
