The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

This year I bought DREDD 3D and absolutely freaking loved it!

Of course whenever I love a movie this much, I just have to put together one of my "budget" costume builds.

"Budget" is relative. I tried to keep close tabs on my spending and to date I've spent over $800 on this build (with the helmet and motorcycle suit taking up the most funds).

So starting at the top. :)

Image

This is my Pannaus Props Dredd helmet. Completely finished by Fulvio- I did nothing other than add a wee bit of steel paint dry brushing on the battle damage grooves, and add some internal padding.

Image

Image

My scratch made vest, and motorcycle jacket.

The vest began as a leather vest I found at a second hand store. Going off the dozens of pics on the RPF and the web, I eyeballed some templates for the armour plates:

Image

The plates were then created with multiple layers of craft foam:

Image

Image

And finally attached to the vest with Fabric Fuze double-sided sticky tape. This stuff is like gummy glue sticking to everything incuding the scissors used to cut the tape with! However it is great for fabric/leather and items that need to be stuck, but remain flexible.

Some close ups:

Image

The Dredd badge is a promotional metal pin (offered at SDCC), and unfortunately undersized.

Shoulder bells were created from a hockey chest pad and sewn directly to the leather vest.

Image

Image

The Wings and Eagle were again three layers of craft foam. The pics don't really show it, but I used three different shades of gold (including one that was more on the green side), and then weathered with a black wash.

Image

The Crown. Not my best effort as I think it turned out more like a Shell gas station logo.

The "bicep" armour actually started out as what was going to be the knee pads. However as luck would have it, I felt the knee pads looked better on my arms. I still had to shape some craft foam rather than using the existing hard shells the knee pads came with... mostly because I couldn't get any of every type of spray paint to stick to the damn off white shells. I even tried "dyeing" them with straight Rit-Dye!

Here is what the knee pads originally looked like to give you some idea:

Image

Image

My belt. This is one thing I plan on improving. It's more a hodge-podge of on hand items (some from my Grayson Robin costume).

Image

The holster is again made from craft foam.

Image

The Medkit is craft foam as well. You can't really see it, but there is a red cross symbol embossed in the foam (albeit the craft foam has "memory" and so the cross is not as pronounced when I first embossed it). The flashlight ring will eventually hold a bunch of ziptie handcuffs.

Image

The "breaching mine" holder started out as a handcuff case that I cut portions out of to look like the mine holder (I will get around to spraying it green). The buckle is metal from ebay.

Image

My Lawgiver is an "Air Zone Quickfire 6." (Many thanks Doc! )

Image

Image

Sprayed with satin black, then given a misting shot of flat black, and finally dry weathered with steel paint.

Image

The motorcycle suit (just kidding on the CENSORED block  ).

Now some full shots!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The boots are New Rock "Reactor" boots. Again reused from my Grayson Robin costume along with the gloves. I plan on buying the V4 Leathernext gloves, and eventually more accurate boots (although I "do" like the slight height increase my New Rocks give me... from 5'5" to something like 5'8").

Here are a couple of decent pics from Fan Expo in Toronto last month:

Image

Image

Got to meet Karl Urban at the Expo! While it was the autograph line and I could only spend about 10 seconds with him, he did say "Yeeeessss! Awesome costume!" :D

So things I want to improve- definitely getting an accurate sized badge, and increasing the size of the chest armour plates (way too small, even though I was trying to "not make them too big" on purpose because of the undersized badge). I still have to create some accurate knee pads and elbow pads. And like I said, improving the belt with the "missing" items (gas grenade, flash bangs, door breaching mine).

Oh... and because I just couldn't resist...

Image

I AM THE LAW!!!!!!!

Once again, you are crowned king of the budget builds! You and Joe are going to have to enter the Thunderdome for the crown!
Two costumers enter, one costumer leaves! :)

Great work Kev! You would NOT have looked out of place with Rex and all the other Judges at Dragoncon this year!

Well done!

Speechless...however not 'typeless' so I'll type what I cannot say.

WOW!!
For a budget build it's pretty darn awesome.
That being said 'budget' can mean $100 or $100,000...as long as that's what you've got.

Awesome, just awesome!!
Now...D*Con with Rex and we can have a Dredd-off :)

Both Rex and I picked up Sean Cho's badges with the swappable name plates. Kind of spendy... but kind of awesome as well.

Sean Cho's badges are so worth it though, and he only lives 5 minutes away from me!

Awesome work as usual Kevin. Aside from your resistance soldier, I think this is your best costume. I'm completing my Judge Dredd / Lex costume for next years con season so what you did with your utility belt I might use for reference for mine.

Again awesome work!!

Looking good, Kevin!

I'd love to do a Dredd costume but had no idea on how to go about starting it. This gives me some great ideas.

Many thanks everyone!

The SA facial expessions were probably the most difficult to find- there are plenty on ebay but shipping was outrageous! Planet Replicas is selling them, however they are the comic versions and I really wanted the movie versions.

There was a guy in South Africa, however I heard the quality was bad and they might be recasts.

In the end I decided to just wing it and make my own facial expressions; they ended up being a blend of movie and comic style. :)

But seriously, thanks for the feedback! :delta:

As for the petition, I always get a little weary about signing things online so unfortunately I didn't. However it is my understanding that a movie sequel has been permanently scrapped in favour of a comic (magazine) sequel, which should be out this month!

well the gross sadly so far is only so so, let alone the net profits, they're still evaluating the dvd/blu-ray impact. Karl Urban is apparently supporting the petition, and suggested teeting (twittering?) at lionsgate films about it. I dunno, just putting it out there is all.

(and as a poor, jobbing actor looking for work if there's a sequel I can audition, and of course win the role of Judge Death;p)
