The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

This pretty much sums it up. If you are a fan of the book, well I won't spoil it if you never read it I would spend your money on the book. By the time I was done I realized wow I could have had my laundry done by now.

I'm totally sick and tired of Zombie anything...and vampires for that matter. But, as far as the movies that have come out in the last 5-10 years, this one caught my eye.

Is it good if you haven't read the book, and go in with an open mind?

I hate it when they do that. It kinda looks like the Resident Evil films. If it's as silly as them then maybe ok

What's the book's premise? Who is the author...any comparison between how they wrote and other contemporary authors?

SPOILERS

Author is Max Brooks, the premise is a post-apocalyptic world where civilization is coming back. The author is traveling world wide interviewing survivors and recording their stories. From the first patient zero (in china at the three gorges dam) to the clearing of zombies from coast to coast using foot soldiers covering the US in one huge line of military and armed civilians from Canada to Mexico (taking over three years). There is an epic battle in yonkers new york between the US army and the zombie hoards heading out of NYC. The battle in israel is only briefly mentioned. The govt. at first gets sporadic reports of attacks in the US but manage keep them isolated by sending in spec ops to sanitize the scenes, but of course it didnt work.

I can't think of how to compare him to other authors. It is well written walking dead style I suppose. Not a lot of slash and gore just well written stories of survival.

Least I get to see plenty of places I know from Glasgo....erm, Philly.....in it

I went and saw the movie tonight...it was FUN!!! There was enough action and suspense to keep my heart rate up a bit, but it wasn't over the top. I'd recommend it.

Going to read the book now. :)

Yeah... I can perhaps say the same thing... however, there are great exceptions which I will never get fed up of:

Vampiric:
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens
Shadow of the Vampire (Which is a dramatization of the making of Nosferatu)
Dracula
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Fright Night
Interview with the Vampire
Vampire$
Blade Trilogy
Daybreakers

Zombie:
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
The Return of the Living Dead (Because it's so damn funny)
The Walking Dead

Awesome list:)

You will finish it in a day or so and see why the fans are mad. I would have liked it better if it had been called something else like BRAD PITT VS. THE MARATHON ZOMBIES OF THE WORLD!!

So the book by Max Brooks came in the mail...and for the first 65 pages, I liked it. But the problem is, I would get engrossed in one of the survivor's interviews, then naturally he just stops and goes onto the next person. I know that is the entire format of the book, but it's honestly driving me fucking bonkers.

Don't get me wrong, I knew that going into it, and it is a unique format for a story, but at the same time it's skipping around so much that I can't sink my teeth into it. So now it's going up on the shelf, probably un-finished. Screw you Max Brooks.

Well, finally got to see WWZ (In the extended extra-shooty scenes OMFG uber cut...Or something) and I'm conflicted:

On the one hand it was a pretty good solid zombie apocolypse actioner, avoided too many cliches and pounded along at a fair old lick.

On the other hand, as per The Oatmeal's diagram, it shares about 1% of it's DNA with the actual WWZ book which marks it out as a massively missed oppurtunity to do something interesting. {Truth to tell, they'd need to do a series to actually capture the various viewpoints of the book}

But the final negative weight on the evenly balanced scales is Brad Pitt practically smirking at the camera as he sips from a can of pop towards the end....That made me want to punch the TV at the sheer, afronting, cheesiness of it. I believe that sometimes there's one scene that can make or break a movie- and that was it in this case.

As an antidote to the movie, I highly recommend listening to the latest version of the WWZ audio book. For various reasons, several parts of the original book are missing, but the updated edition is a damn fine production with many restored bits of the book.

I read (and loved) the book and saw the unrated version of the movie last week. As has been mentioned, the movie and book have NOTHING to do with each other.

That being said, the movie is not bad. It's a pretty good zombie movie that just happens to share the same title as a really good book.
