...for the first time since 9/11.

Between tattoos and time out of the country (and marriage and kids) I'd just fallen out of the habit. But my childhood best friend (and fellow Aliens fanatic) is struggling with cancer and I realized I needed to get off my butt do my part out there. My good health is a blessing, and the least I can do is give a pint to help someone less fortunate.

I used the opportunity to go to work in partial uniform, and it was met with enthusiastic approval.

I've been trying to give blood since 9/11 but the darn FDA has banned anyone who has spent time in the UK (and Europe I believe) due to CJD (the human form of mad cow discease).
I'd love to give blood and do MMOOOOOOOOOOORE but until the ban is lifted I'm not allowed :(

*that was a cow impression by the way. It doesn't work so well in text*

I think you're probably OK. According the Red Cross, unless you had a blood transfusion over there, spent longer than 3 months there before 1996, or spent longer than 5 years in the UK/certain countries (both cumulative time periods), you can donate. Here's the detailed criteria: http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-b ... sting#arc5

If people are telling you otherwise, I would bring a copy with you!

Yup, blood transfusions in the UK were their biggest concern. Stop by a Red Cross office and plead your case!

Is it true you chaps get paid for donating over there?

And why does everyone think we all eat diseased cows??

Because unlike a few other countries we admitted we had a problem and dealt with it! Anyone remember the furore when Oprah Winfrey dared to suggest, rightly or wrongly, that there was BSE in US Beef herds? I seem to recall it went to litigation and made a few lawyers some tidy sums! :?

The US meat industry is literally shocking, how they have the nerve do what they do and have the nerve to go on about our meat is beyond me.

Anywho, Well done Retro. Now you can lay back and wonder who's got a bit of you inside them ;)
I kinda wish they told you where it ended up going, we could be feeding the secret society of Vampires that runs the world...*
(*probably not)

Proudly serving my Vampire Masters!

There are places where you can donate blood or plasma for cash, but this was a blood drive put on by my work. Sometimes they give out t-shirts or a pound of coffee, but simply laying down while on the clock was a nice bonus!

Haha! It all reminds me of Blade everytime I go :)

That's cool, we just get a drink, biscuits and crisps (chips). If we're lucky we get a hot nurse too ;)

We have far cooler seats though, it may look like a piece of plastic (as it is) but it's so comfy!

I lived there from 1982 to 2004, ate beef every Sunday and even went back for seconds.
I'm out until they tell me otherwise :(

...BUT I REGRET NOTHING!!!

I've never been offered payment other than a thank you and some cookies/juice. I go every 6 weeks or whatever it is - as often as they let me. I'm O neg, so they love me. I'm also registered to donate marrow if they ever find I'm a match.

Last place I saw that did donations offered a coupon for a couple burritos from a local Mexican restaurant or a $10 card at the nearest fuel station depending on the week.

Are you not getting confused with another type donation?

You can get paid for plasma donation, but I hear it's a bit more painful than donating blood. Haven't done it myself.

Ah the good ol' US of A. So many bodily fluids, so many paying oppertunities....

But in all seriousness; Well done Retro! Damn inspiring. I haven't given blood since college and I'm overdue.

No it's Bone Marrow Donation which is painful and requires surgery!
