Hello chaps, was hoping to get some advice here. A friend of mine is currently working on a short docu/horror, it's a small affair and I have offered my services to help with any props etc. My task is to replace the UK registration plates on 2 vehicles. A MK1 1970's Ford Capri and a VW Campervan. I need to replace the existing plates with US Plates. My question is this
Both vehicles are circa 1970's, in the US at that time was there a particular type of plate, standard size/colour that would have been used? did the front and back differ in size/colour? I have done a little research and it seems that the current standard size is 6"X12". I want to make sure that I do as good a job as possible and don't want to make any glaring errors. The plates are only a small detail and there are no plans to use them for any close ups. There's not enough cash in the budget to simply buy some so I am planning on just creating some using software, printing them off and mounting them onto card then to the cars for the sequences.
I wanted to use the numbers from existing Horror films just to serve as a little nod ;) Here's what I have come up with so far......just having a quick play: reg plates from Phsyco. Also plan to use "Christine's" plate too. Thanks in advance for any help :) David.

Every state in the US has a different look. Does it matter which state the car is from? I think using Christine's license is clever. Here is what I found on Wiki: Christine's license plates read "CQB 241". CQB is a military acronym for "close quarters battle", where targets are engaged at very close range, very swiftly and usually very violently, leaving the victim with little chance of withdrawal and/or survival. The "241" on the license plate may be read "Two for One" indicating a fight of two (Arnie and Christine) against "one" (the next victim).

Christine's car was a 1958 model but the movie was set in 1978 and the license is like you have above for California - a big yellowish/orange California plate. Hope it helps!

I'm in an old Mopar club. What sort of era is the plate going to be? A 50s plate? A 70s plate? It depends more on the year of the car.

May seem a strange source, but check out the shark autopsy scene from Jaws, you get a good close-up of the license plate in Brody's hands.

You may even be able to find a good screengrab online.

Thanks for this everyone. Very useful, I lOVE the Christine trivia there so thanks for that :)
The story is set during the '70s. Here's where I am at with it now, using screen grabs of actual plates this time which I've then taken and edited. There's already a glaring error. Can you spot it?

Also, what I REALLY need to know asap is whether the front and rear plates differ in size at all or are they just exact the same for front and back?
