The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hello all.

I'm wondering if there is a database of recognized ship names, battalions, squads etc. that can be or is used to tie into to add authenticity to one's CM persona?

Similar to the way the 501st has local area groups they identify as Garrisons or the Mando Mercs have Clans. I ask because I'm cultivating a local group of people to gear up as a fire team of CMs and was thinking of a unique way of unifying them under a specific squad or ship "banner".

Cheers

D

Dom I'm confused by the heraldry of this patch. :?

The triangular emblem is clearly inspired by the Union Flag (Jack to the uninitiated) and yet the ship is entitled U.S.S which usually means United States Ship?

So shouldn't it be UAS or even HMS/HMCS?

Or is the patch from a future date when both Canada and Great Britain have been assimilated as the 51st and 52nd states of the union?

Winch, I actually designed this patch with Mike Rush prior to the formation of the UKCM, when all we had was a USCM and everyone was a bit lost. ;) The intention was a USCMC unit that incorporated UK recruits (the incorporation of the logo a relic of Britain's former colonial past between the dates of Alien and Aliens), operating at any given time from a designated USCMC troop ship. The counterpart patch was for the 4th Battalion, which had the US triangle, operating aboard the USS Sardis.

May I have permission to secede the union and join Munkey's New British coloney?

Dom you are the man! Thanks!

I'm really liking the patches for the USS Sinon. I may present it to my group and see what they think.

Are these patches specific to membership in a specific group or could I have a couple of patches made to wear without needing to join this group? I don't wear insignia that I don't have clearance to wear.

I made up my own ship (the USS Conrad) mostly since I wanted something other than the Sulaco, but didn't want to pay for custom patches. Here's how I did it:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11376&p=172249&hilit=conrad+patch#p172249

There's another ship patch on eBay sometimes, but I didn't know who made it.

Good luck!

It was meant to be open to all while retaining a canonical flair. The UK centre, the US assignment, and if you look around the edge of the patch, you see the yellow stars of the European Union. Anyone can wear it. So says me. :)

There's an USS Alamo patch floating around Ebay. That's the one I'm currently basing my USCM character on until plans change..maybe. :)

Good deal then! Sinon it is!

Now to get my people some PT shirts for when we go running and lift weights in the gym.

Big thanks Fal!

Bit of trivia that might help...

The ship in "ALIEN" is called the "Nostromo."

Joseph Conrad was an author who wrote a novel called "Nostromo", which is where they (most likely) got the name for the vessel in "ALIEN" from. The book was written in the early 1900s. The main character is "Nostromo."

The "Narcissus" (the escape ship in "ALIEN") is also named after another of Joseph Conrad's works (however the title is a little inappropriate... you'll just have to look it up).

If you read the first chapter of "Nostromo", it describes the setting as a fictional mining town called "Sulaco".

"Sulaco" is located in the fictional country of "Costaguana." If this were somewhere in the real World it would be around Columbia.

So if you are looking for names for ships, I would sift through "Nostromo" and see what you can come up with.

By the way, my "active duty ship" (found under my avatar) is the USS Socorro... "Socorro" is the name of another city found in the novel "Nostromo."

Here is the whole book online:

Have fun!

That neither Alien3 nor A:R used Costaguana as a ship name baffles me. I remember researching the whole Conrad thing before internet access was (readily) available, so why couldn't the army of screenwriters that worked on those films?

And since Ridley Scott had just made "The Duelists" based on Conrad's "The Duel" I'd assume he was the one who proposed the name change. O'Bannon called the ship the Snark in his original screenplay, and that name pops back up in the crew dossiers seen in Ripley's debriefing.

The SNP got their short-sighted way in the Aliens universe and we're not part of the British armed forces any more

Heh - It's more that I have no desire to be part of "Her/His Majesty's" anything.
( Shut up. I know where I work. It pays well. Doesn't mean I like it! :p )

I also prefer the idea of United Systems - Once we expand beyond one planet, there'll be little need for the sort of antiquated petty feudalism and elitism that we have causing so much strife in this day and age.
Granted, it'll be replaced with corporate scumbaggerry, but still...
