The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Many thanks guys! Very much appreciated! :D

I've got a makeshift bomb sling made so that it will attach to my web-belt:

Image

Using a Canadian webbing piece with a black strap around the bomb itself (held on with velcro). It will do for now.

As for a tutorial it's mostly off the shelf stuff--

-Gray "Castro" hat
-US Army Sun/dust/wind goggles
-Racal headset
-Gray ski jacket that fit the bill (although a more accurate gray flight jacket will be for a future upgrade).
-Custom padding over back and shoulders
-Gray cargo pants
-Tac boots (any old leather combat boots will do as the greaves cover just about all of them)
-The pics of Reese show a Vietnam era web-belt with the metal buckle.
-Various pouches repainted blue/gray

The greaves:

Image

These are baseball backcatcher shin guards with the large piece of vinyl placed behind them. I might eventually try to make a more accurate pair- but I think these fit the bill nicely.

-Nerf Longshot in two tone Endo Rifle colours.

Funny thing is after watching the future war sequences from The Terminator, I think I went a step further with sewing everything on (such as the nametape and padding). If you watch closely while Kyle sits down and unfolds the Polaroid of Sarah Conner, you can see that his padding is just tacked on- not totally sewn down. Same goes for the nametape; it's just attached at the ends.

Thanks again guys! Hopefully I'll get some action shots of my patrol on Saturday night!

I've just come back to this thread after a while, and now having seen the
finished pics to be honest I think you've done a really good job, Kev.
Sure looks like a T2 suit to me; close enough. Nice work. Made me want
to watch T2 again, so I'm off to do that now! :D

Oh yeah, "I'll be back"

Stay on topic people !!!
Great costume Kevin.
I have friends who were working the Rue Morgue party and they mentioned your costume.
They thought it was a great costume that wasn't part of the regular type costumes.
Something that you may or may not recognize right away.
Good job.

Not sure what you ended up using for the padded fabric, but be careful with moving blankets, they aren't meade that great. I used one for a gambeson to do medieval stuff and it fell apart after a couple of weeks.

I would suggest getting some canvas that's the color you want (or dye it) , some batting and sew it yourself, I did this and it holds up better and you can wash it.

Note: Start with bigger piece of material than you need since it will get smaller as you "quilt" it. :D

Learned that the hard way

I know I saw an article/post topic/photo set (long time ago - can't remember exactly) about the Reese jacket from Terminator.

I have a feeling that "fairly heavy rubber" was mentioned as being used for the padding on there.

I could be mistaken. It was quite a while ago and I really can't remember for sure but it does ring a bell.

Hey Kevin, just wandered into this thread and I gotta say your terminator costume is crap - it needs to be much thinner and more skeletal, plus the colour is too grey, needs to be chrome silver and with glowing eyes...

Yes! I've made the decision to make this a T1 Reese future soldier impression. This is going to be a freakin' carbon copy of his uniform when I'm done! I will leave no stone unturned, no miniscule detail overlooked. It's gonna be frakking awesome!

At the moment I'm surfing around for a flight jacket in gray or hopefully that bluish gray appearance (despite what Scott "Hanger 18" said- I have seen gray flight jackets).

Image

Next up will be the correct padding. I've got a couple of leads on the moving blanket material- but I think I might go with Tarim-Rex's advice of making it myself. Depends on how cheap/expensive buying the blanket versus raw materials would be, and checking just how durable it is.

I plan on attaching it to the jacket with velcro so it can be removed for cleaning purposes. This of course is up in the air- I might go with something stronger like snaps, or sew in on permanently.

I already own the correct web-belt with the metal clasp and gromets (not pictured on me- it's from my Vietnam US GI impression). Just have to decide if I will leave it green, or repaint it blue/gray like my pouches.

More to come. :D

K Burton,

Firstly I like your Resistance costume. Secondly After looking at the first picture of Reese, the base jacket looks like An Alpha Industries CWU. The pockets line up correctly and the waist is elastic. Either way, artistic freedom would defiantly allow you to use an array of military jackets as this future reality is a scavenger type. For a last minute Halloween job you did fantastic

Did I read correctly that you can sew?

That grey flight jacket looks like the brown flight jacket I bought last year for my dropship pilot jacket...and it only cost me $9.

Kev, if you like, I can go by the store where I bought mine and see if they have a grey version.

But mind you, mine isn't military surplus, so it might not be film accurate, but it would be "close". Got it from a store called "Steve and Barry's".

Excellent!! I've got a strong feeling that this thread will be extremely helpful for several others and choose to continue to keep my input ON TOPIC. More than likely it is going to be pruned and archived, anyway. ;)

Yunno? I've not ever been one much into the costuming realm of the hobby but you may have inspired me to think a little differently about it. Please keep me posted on your discoveries with the flight jacket as well as the padding material. I can offer very little assistance in the way of patch or needle work but may be of help in parting out excess material, fabricating greeblies, ...or even identifying 'correct' EMP components. ;)

Just a side note to this, I too would like to piece together a uniform that matches one of the Reese 'FUTURE WAR' production stills. May consider adding a few custom touches to it like attaching a few odd T2 endo arm pieces from the belt or chest section in a similar fashion as the Wookie scalps from Boba Fett's armour. I've got several of these left over from the last commissioned endo arm that I had built and have been wondering what to do with them.

If I can have any more helpful input on this, I'll be glad to post up. But as mentioned earlier, the costuming fabrication area is not my place of expertise. Kevin, you have one fan that will be watching this thread with keen interest.

BTW - Thanks for starting a discussion covering a uniform from one of my MOST favorite films. ;) :D

I too think the Alpha jacket is perfect. One problem, and it ain't the looks. It says it's good to 20 degrees!! And that's just standin' around. Is it hard to remove the lining? That's just waaaaay too hot in Atlanta in the summertime. Can we just take a seam ripper to the inner lining of the body of the jacket as well as the arms?

That's an excellent point. I'd hate to be sweating like a dog especially for my first year at D-Con. ;)

I went over to Tom's site (the other Tom) to do some more research and found something that may be a little cooler to wear. Check this out.

This is the Jacket from John Connor. The Christie's auction catalog says, it was used in THE TERMINATOR (1984). I searched the future war scenes, but couldn't find John Connor appearing in them.

From site: http://www.hollywoodhardware.de/terminator/index.htm (accessed 31.10.07)

To my knowlege John never made an 'official' appearance in T1. Perhaps he could have been in a deleted scene.

So we all agree that there are at least 2 types of jackets. The Alpha/flight type and the 3/4 length.

I really like that 3/4 jacket. Almost looks like a modified M-41 field jacket or a "safari" jacket. Saw a black one from Abercrombie and Fitch that was somewhat similar. If it's 100% cotton, it might, might, be able to remove the color enough...

Or, find a white jacket and dye it...

Just picked up this one- 100% cotton, looks to be a greyish-blue, right type collar, 3/4 length. Possible to dye if need be.

Thanks again guys!

Lear60man- yeah I can sew but it's basic in-out stitches. I also have access to my wife's sewing machine if need be.

I'm going to have a look for an old Canadian Air Force flight jacket I used to have when I was in Air Cadets. It's at my Parents house (if they haven't thrown it out or donated it   ).

If I remember correctly, it's that blue-gray colour and should have the correct pockets. However it is a cold weather jacket and has a big furry collar . Not sure if the colar zips off or not. Might still be something good to work with and see how it looks.
