The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

For the love of your social life stop!

I went to a private school where the uniforms were blue. So to put my own touch on things I wore a classic Trek blue science officer top as a sweater.

Yeah... do I need to say how often I was teased?

It would be best to use the phaser as an example and then, as zuzus suggested, pass it around negating your hand pain while also allowing yourself to use your now phaser-free hands to engage the audience and illuminate any forthcoming points. You and your knowledge should be the meat of the speech. Don't rely on the crutch of a prop. The phaser is icing on the cake only.

i can't pass it around...it might not come back

see, the tournaments are held at host schools and other schools compete in it. therefore, if i passed it around, it might not come back (or at the very least, not in one piece)...

I'm kinda lost here...
Surely you only have to actually hold the phaser up for a short time?
Can you not put it down, or clip it to your belt, or put it in a pocket or something?
A toy phaser's a toy phaser... And the one you have I remember being very light indeed. I weighted mine with plasticene actually, to give it a better heft as a prop when I repainted it.
