The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Man I wish I had the time for Krav Maga! Turn you into a badass in no time flat!

Funny- I used to take a street fighting class back in 1998. We learned a bit of everything- Kung Fu, boxing, wrestling, stick fighting (which I loved), even knife fighting and gun disarming (which was cool- but hope to God I never have to use it).

It was also pretty laid back- we called our instructor by his first name (not Sensei or Sifu). We wore our street clothes including our shoes (you're not going to get into a fight barefoot... unless you're at the beach  ). There was no bowing or anything (we actually would insist on bowing at the end of class even though our instructor thought it wasn't necessary).

I did it for 9 months. Unfortunately my instructor had to close the school as it wasn't making enough money to pay the bills and he needed to get a real job (he ended up getting a Brinks guard job).

That was 10 years ago- makes me wonder what kind of a Mofo I would be today if I had kept with it.

BTW, if anyone was wondering why 42 minutes? We'll, that's the length of a Stargate SG1 Episode.

Cons are the new crash diet!

I ate badly over the weekend (full English breakfast, anyone?) and still managed to loose 6lbs in a week!!!! :D

Ah.... but dehydration doesn't really count as weight loss, does it? You gotta be careful with that one, cons can really dry you up if you're not careful.

I was only at the con for about five hours and was plenty hydrated. I've been home two days now and weighed myself this morning - that's why I was surprised to have lost that much.

Lets see if I'm bragging quite so much next week when I realise I've put it all back on. ;)

Keep forgetting to say good job with the running. I don't think I could run for 4.2 minutes let alone at 4mph!

Hello, my name is Gareth and I'm 6ft 7inches and about 205 lbs. I am one of these annoying people who can stuff themselves with junk, never exercise and still not put on weight. However, my diet and lack of exercise makes me feel rotten, and impairs my endurance in the Alien costume.

When it looked like Alien War was going to re-open, I started to jog and eventually I was doing 30 minutes of fast jogging every day easily. After the initial shock, I found it made me feel better and I had more energy. Despite this, when the new Alien War went to sh*t, I went back to my old habits. So, for D*Con, I want to get fit again mainly so I can better tolerate the heat in Atlanta.

Obviously, I have no desire to lose weight, and I don't want to build much muscle mass (an Alien would look silly with Kev's arms! ;) ), but is there anything else I can do other than jogging? The only other thing I can think of is swimming ...

My current status is: 5 mins of slow jogging yesterday nearly killed me ;) I know it gets easier!

Thanks for the encouragement Vicky, I appreciate it! :)

For those of you toying with the idea of jogging, I can only recommend a slow progression combined with dedication. Being an over-weight person, jogging has always been a painful thing... I've used mental tricks to keep my mind off the pain. On the treadmill, I watch videos... on the streets, I blast my music. I also recite things as I run to keep my mind off the misery of what I'm doing. My regiment has 36 battle honours and I recite each one, one at a time out loud.

Give it a try, what have you got to lose except a few pounds?

Incidentally, my gf told me I look smaller today. :D

uhhmmmmm Dom, did she get confused in the French to English translation or did I? I think you want her to say, "Thinner" not "Smaller"
Anyway, keep up the great work!

Mike

Added a little twist to my routine, as the countdown reached 6, I cranked it up to 6 MPH, then 5 MPH at 5 mins, then 4 & 3. Little sprint at the end felt good.

I've still not dropped under 220lbs :(

I'm going to attempt a diet based off the glycemic index and see how that goes along with the usual gym schedule.
The pool is also open now so for nights where I can't make the gym I can do a few laps.

Well, I think I shall take a page out of Dom's book and get some goals written out here.

GOAL: Max out the US Army PFT by August 15, 2008.

Pushups Required: 71
Situps Required: 78
2-Mile Run: 13:00 or less.

For reference, here are the minimum passing specs:

Pushups Required: 42
Situps Required: 53
2-Mile Run: 15:54

SECONDARY GOAL: Work out and increase muscle mass (by August 15, 2008)

I am going to take a benchmark test (We'll see if I even pass... :? )
tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Collin "Ripper714"

Good luck! :)

Forgive me but what's a benchmark test? :?

Colin- make sure you increase your protein intake- chicken, fish, eggs, milk, lean beef, etc or get a protein shake supplement (I'd just do it with food though).

1.5 to 2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight would be plenty.

Again best of success! :D

A benchmark is a standard to test a variable against. For instance, if you are testing video cards in a computer, you need a standard video card to compare the others to. In my case, I am making an initial test of myself to compare further tests against.

Anyways, I just finished my first benchmark test and here are the results:

6/03/08

Pushup: 47
[10 Minute Break]
Situps: 57
[10 Minute Break]
2-Mile Run: 16:06

APFT Score: 190
63.33% to the maximum 300. (300? Coincidence? I think not.)

>_> Ouch! I didn't think I was that out of shape. Shows what I know. I've got a lot of work to do.

Hey Collin!

In what sort of time do you have to do those push-ups and sit-ups? Is it the old standard of as many as you can do in two minutes?

Do you have a link to the APFT requirements? And I'm guessing the numbers are different for women.

Would be interesting to see how everyone scores on this and then maybe do it once a month to see how things are changing.
