The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Safety glasses INSIDE a ballistic visor?.... Someone's a bit nervous, eh. ;)

As all the articles insist, it *looks* exceeding cool....

However, peripheral vision will be reduced, the visor will steam up to buggery and having that full-face protection will result in decreased soldier performance as CO2 will gather in the front and make breathing harder.
I know this because I wear one of these every day on my motorcycle!!

Seriously, any biker who has had to fight and/or run around in a full-face helmet (we play some very silly games at our bike rallies) will tell you, this will be very knackering!

That said, I would love to have something like this to ride on the bike, especially with NVGs and stuff clipped on!!
I wonder if they'll sell these off cheap when they realise soldiers don't want 'em....

Looks like a helmet to help a soldier fend off a facehugger attack!

Ask Kane how well a helmet fends off a facehugger attack!

Well, it would keep the thing from attaching to your face right off the bat, if combined with a throat guard of some sort, you might have a chance of getting it off of you before it gets too close for comfort. Which leads to another silly thought, if you had a team of guys going into the Derelict to clear the egg chamber out, it would be a great idea to send them in some kind of flame retardant suit and helmet setup with flamethrowers, that way if one of the little guys tries to give you a kiss, one of your friends could just 'wash it off' with quick burst of flame and enable you to get back to work.

Of course I think that kind of job would be better done with a team of synthetics myself!

i saw an hour show the other day with a ranger testing the guns that changed the world.i was astounded to see that modern helmets are literally no protection at all or atleast a very small amount. there were rounds zipping through Kevlar and wounding these ballistic jelly mannequins. heads were popped. never knew helmets were so limited.

Helmets have NEVER been bulletproof.
Even a .45ACP will go through most helmets and there are many training videos (usually firepower demos) that show this. A 30.06 will go through a flippin' tree (I have a WW2 vid showing this), so what use would a helmet be there?

The whole idea behind them, from the Tommy tin-lid to the M1 to the PASGT to the S6 has always been fragmentation protection.

Artillery was (and probably still is) the biggest battlefield casualty-maker by a massive majority lead. A single 60mm mortar round can devastate an entire Company in a closed LUP. Most of that is fragmentation and also why frag vests are issued, rather than actual bullet-proof ones.

Ttaskmaster is dead on.

Rounds from the main battle rifles of World War I (8mm, .30-06, .303, 7.62x54R) will go right through a small-medium tree, or even a brick wall, let alone a helmet.

Helmets are for frag protection. The occasional very very lucky soldier will find his pot deflected a round, typically one from out of effective range or it hit at a very wide angle.

The pic at the top LOOKS cool-ish, but it'd suck to wear it in the real world. Those of you who troop with a steel USCM pot know how heavy and warm that thing gets just wandering around a con. Let alone running in an unfriendly and unhealthy environment!

And sometimes someone will just get lucky.
A friend of my mine saw his oppo take a direct shot into the front of his helmet. As luck would have it, and much to everyone's surprise, the helmet was enough to change the track of the bullet which skimmed his head. Gave him a nice gash and a concussion but otherwise he was okay.
Without the helmet he'd have been dead.
