Post subject:  FAQ: Can a Cheap spring-powered Thompson be used in a PR?

Edit: title changed from: 'Will the PR AS kit fit a spring-powered Thompson?'

I want to build a pulse rifle that has a soundboard, a working counter, and muzzle flash. I only want it for costuming purposes, and although a Tokyo Marui would be nice, I have no intention of shooting bb's and am terrified to dryshoot such a piece.

Is is possible to get the spring powered Thompson and use the PR kit on it?

Thanks in advance.

Why not. I've got a veru accurate one I found in Taiwan of a 1927 (diff. receiver). But the scale is exact. I checked it against dummy recvr, TM.:)

I believe the spring thompson is the 1928 model The upper reciever is quite a bit wider than the M1A1 model we use for the Pulse rifle. Stuffing it into the airsoft PR shroud would require a bit of hacking and sanding to get it in there..I imagine it could be done though.

yep, the spring powered Thompson's are the 1928 (or M1928 ) model. The version used in the Pulse rifle is the M1A1, released in the mid-1940s.

The true Thompson gurus will chime in, but the 1928 has several differences which make it mostly unsuitable for making a pulse rifle.

A bit of hacking, sanding, relocating the bolt from the top of the receiver to the side, which will neuter any firing ability of the gun...

There's a lot against it. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it may be more work than it's worth. It really boils down to how much your time is worth. :)

Ok. Somebody please give me a measurement of the M1A1. I lied. I didn't check it (the M1928) against my M1A1 block.

Which measurements you need MAA?
The reciever is approx 1.325inch/33.5mm then flares out to 1.85inch/46mm to meet the grip frame/fire control group.

Mind you the one I'm measuring is an aluminum dummy but should be close to a few thousanths. ;)

Post subject:  Re: Will the PR AS kit fit a spring-powered Thompson?

Nobody has stepped forward saying they've done it.

A couple years ago somebody DID make one, but they relocated the bolt from the top, to the side, neutering the firing ability.

As has been mentioned previously, the M1928 has a few differences from the M1A1 Thompson. They include...

- Slightly different shape pistol grip/lower receiver.
- Larger size upper receiver.
- Top mounted bolt.
- Finned barrel (Although there are people now selling Top bolt Thompsons with the smooth/non-finned barrel on eBay, but they're still calling them M1A1's, which is incorrect.)

If you are a skilled modeler (and I know YOU are from your other work) you could certainly make a modded or derivative pulse rifle using an M1928.

There's a whole other thread devoted to the ins and outs of the cheap (and not so cheap) plastic Spas 12's Here.

So has anyone tried this yet? On ebay, it looks like you can get a spring spas and 1928 thompson for a little over $100. Matt gets us the shrouds, with room for the upper bolt.

I dunno, those cockroaches can live for like 500 years ya know. ;)

I'm going to try this just for fun, using all springer parts. Thompson, spas, and 870. Gun show is coming up and they usually sell these thompson springers for cheaper than ebay, and I have a couple plastic spas cages laying around.

In the next few weeks I'll post some photos of my progress with some vac formed shrouds.

Post subject:  Re: Will the PR AS kit fit a spring-powered Thompson?

This thread lives!

FYI I just got a mod 1928 for the very purpose of modifying it for PR use.

I plan to widen the shroud to fit over the upper reciever of the 1928, and not bother with relocating the bolt but rather modify it to be ambidexterous similar to the G36 design.

Being wider , the standard PR stock will not fit, and there will be hardly any room left in the shroud to fit a larger one in there even if you did. So this leaves the 1928 a good candidate for our thumbhole stock version.

The trick is to not try and make the 1928 look like an m1a1 that's too much trouble. The point is to make an all new variant.

Rook, do you still have that line art you did of the thumbhole/sniper PR?
Post it or send it to me to post if you have time.

Alex, if you ever get the notion, and since you got the gigabytes to do it, I fancy to see a smartly rendered, shaded, textured...etc etc version of that gun...

And since I'm barking orders..Noeland, we need a progress report on that springer project!

Sarah, coffee...black...and wheres my copy of "Modern Carnage"....someone get...Armat on the phone, and for gods sake tell Wayland I'll call him when I have a spare nanosecond...sheesh

My thumbhole stock mod with the patented "grip lock pin" system (tm) ( ;) ) is there because, as always, I was basing it on the idea of using an airsoft gun, which requires having access to a removable hand grip which covers the motor of the Marui Thompson. Plus, the larger stock would house a larger battery, allowing the GL section to be used for other bad things.

Here's a quick mock-up:

It uses a 1928 TommyGun Receiver, and the stock is based off Matt's and Russ' fixed stock design.

Here's what the same stock would look like with a regular M1A1 receiver:
