Hi there.
Well, this commemorates my first post in the airsoft forum!

I'm thinking of buying an M16A1 airsoft gun, for converting into a flamethrower prop. I was just wondering can Tokyo Marui products be stripped down like the original guns? I need about half the gun for the flamethrower.

Has anyone ever tried this? Any potential pitfalls I may hit?

[edit] If there is a few brands/types available, which should I get?

And while I'm here, how come nobody uses the airsoft Spas 12 components?

Lewis

well for the M16, all you really need are the inside gun parts (inner barrel, battery, AEG shooter part...thingy)

and as for the apas, i have been told the spas cage is too thick to be used

All you need in this case Lewis is an el cheapo springer airsoft. You're right to choose the M16A1 for the 1 piece receiver including the carrying handle.:)

Wouldn't you have to saw the upper/lower receiver in half on those cheapo M16s? In fact won't you have to saw everything else off too?

Can the 'Classic Army' M16s be field stripped? (it may not be worth the cost to you though)

The recievers on Marui ( And indeed all "clone" AEGs such as Classic Army ) M16s do indeed strip in the same way as a real-steel model.

You'll need TWO though, IIRC.
It's possible to just buy the recievers - at least from CA.

Your BEST bet is to find people who have upgraded to metal bodies, and have the plastic ones lying around useless.

I'll ask around for you.

Hey, if you could do that Rev, that would be excellent! Thanks!

Sarge, I don't get this upper/lower reciever thing- they look like 2 different sides of one part of the gun. Are they like, side by side, and called upper/lower for another reason?

So, if I bought a cheap springer, I'd have to hack out the bits I wanted- wheras if I bought a Marui or a Classic Army, the parts I'd need could be stripped off?

BBC,

[begin disclamer]

I have a modest knowledge of guns so I could be mistaken, but...

[/disclamer]

The upper receiver of a gun contains the bolt, charging handle, and extractor (help me out people). And the lower receiver has the trigger group, and part of the mag well.

I'll try to come up with a picture to illustrate.

*EDIT* ok this should help:

This is the right side of an M-16 upper receiver.

This is the left side of an M-16 lower receiver.

As near as I can tell, if you look at the left side of the flamer, the part under the carry handle is the upper receiver reversed showing the right side. Directly behind it is the left side of part of the lower receiver.

Hope this helps.:)

(However if I am wrong- ignore it all;) )

It's sort of visible here what's been done, if you look closely at the markings, mag release, and the position of the carryhandle...

Ahhh, now there's the picture we've been looking for.:)

I seem to be right about the position and sides of the upper/lower receivers one behind another.

Lewis, if that first pic (of mine) still doesn't work just try a google image search with "M16 receiver", or "AR 15 receiver" and try adding "upper".

WGC lists the reciever assembly for the M4 (both upper and lower) for $70 plus shipping from Hong Kong. A stateside broker could probably get the set for ~$100.

(Yes I know the M4 is not the correct reciever, but given the similarities between this and the M16, it's a good ballpark price)

You also might try posting on Airsoft boards - a lot of airsoft players replace these parts with metal, and will sell the original plastic parts for a song.

Got a mate who's got 3 upgraded M16s, and has the plastic bodies in his attic.
He's gonna look them out, and if he can find them he'll be willing to sell.
Not sure how much yet - will haggle :)

Just a note... being 18 years in the military the "upper" version you want for the flamer is the AR15 mod "M16" note the missing A1 designator. The A1 means that the Upper Reciever has a Forward assist mounted to the rear right side behind the ejection port. (its used to force the bolt into a dirty breech)

The picture posted is the correct version but is not a "A1" upper. Make shure you dont get a A1 or A2 version it will be all jacked up.

What the man said is: Get the VN model upper receiver or you have the F.A. part built in on your upper and that would be inaccurate. You could just shave that part off and patch the ABS receiver body with filler/sand/paint. Reason: you're not likely to find a Marui VN upper cuz they don't sell as much as the A2's and the M4's. Takeoff parts come about when guys upgrade to after-market metal receiver bodies.

"Look man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but...." :)
...have a look at these pictures on Harry's site:

www.encom.demon.co.uk/ft.htm

You'll see that the M-16 Kit used for the flamethrower already had the Forward Assist!
Also note that the lower receiver used for the flame didn't have the raised "border" around the mag release!

Cheers,
Stefan
