The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi.

Can somebody help me out with the URL of somewhere I might find information on setting up making resin models?

I gotta say that, in the past, I've been a bit dubious of resin models. I'm sick of seeing Pulse Rifles which look like they were made of jelly, by a 5 year old!
Anyway, as things turn out, I am working on something and will probably need to begin making resin models. I've just seen Guardian Matsuo's work, in another thread, and I gotta say that I am absolutely gobsmacked. His work is art!

Anyway, my goals are a lot simpler... for the moment.

I play lasertag and it seems daft that you can reload the gun simply by pressing a button. You can, effectively, fire forever with no worries about lugging a wheelbarrow of ammo with you.

I want to make some resin ammo clips so people can actually carry extra ammo and change it out when they reload.

For now all I need to know is how to make copies of things like MP5 and M16 magazines. Nothing big or fancy as yet.

I'm in the UK so any advice regarding good suppliers of materials and what equipment I need wouldbe appreciated.

Thanks.

Neophyl (i think) made a really nice lasertag PR out of Aluminum. Maybe he'll chime in soon.

Ask LollypopUK. She does a lot of resin casting and might be able to give you sources for materials in the UK. Also, try checking out the casting tutorials of Dan Perez...

Thanks Rook 3. That's exactly what I'm after. Nice one!

As for neophyl, and his pule rifle....If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, I've seen the Tagtek and Battlefield sports websites. Let's just say that they're not quite what I'm looking for. ;-)

*shrugs*

I just prefer accurate replicas rather than original designs.

Obviously, for the Battlefield sports site, being based in Australia, replica guns aren't an option.
Beyond that, some people get a buzz out of designing original concepts. Personally, I get my jollies by making replica guns which function authentically.

My lasertag gun, for example, uses the original fire-select, safety catch and charging handle. There are no Maplin switches or buttons poking out of it anywhere. I've never seen another lasertag which works like that.

Unless you have access to decent quality machining facilities then I don't think you can get realistic quality results when making replica guns out of metal. Guns made from sheet alloy with a toy M16 grip poking out of the bottom look a little clumsy to me.

Don't get me wrong, there's obviously a lot of skill and effort involved. I guess it's just diff'rent strokes.

MMm Snake, your new to this forum and not everything Ive made has actually been put onto either the Tagtek site or is available on the BFS site but your right I am the same person.

I post different stuff on different forums depending on the subject matter. For example my lightsabres get shown on starwars related forums.

Anyways maybe you havent seen this version I did of the PR

Still a work in progress, but it is a lasertag version, has removeable clips etc too. Its also 'more' accurate than previous attempts although Id be the last to say it doesnt need more work. Continual improvement is my motto.
Oh yeah and that one was built with very little in the way of machineing facilities. When I get around to purchasing the mill and lathe of course I'll do better.

Oh yeah I also know a little bit about resin casting, enough to make replacement mags for that one or any other gun I make.
Lolly or Matt are much better than me at the moment (Im still learning when it comes to molds too).

What electronics are you putting in there then ? On most modern tag electronics there are usually a limited number of virtual clips so you cant fire all day as you put it. Anyway the new board I have nearly finished uses an EEPROM chip to store the number of rounds in the clip so you can change clips and each clip remembers how many rounds it has left.
Simple matter really.

Is that PR resin or is it alloy?

It's very impressive looking. No arguments there. To be honest, though, Pulse rifles in general don't really float my boat. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't simply turning off and on the power of a lasertag gun reset the number of virtual clips, allowing the person to, quite happily, "shoot all day" as I put it?

Since you are also attempting to cast resin mag's, maybe you can suggest a supplier for the equipment in the UK?

www.cfsnet.co.uk/

Sells everything you need for resin casting - not cheap, but reliable!

Thanks for the nice comments :)

Some more info. in BBC's thread you may find useful.

Making the mould is the hard part - that's what takes the time! Planning the entry and exit routes for resin etc....

Thanks for the Compliments Sid, really it all boils down to carefull and dare I say smart planning when making molds.

Use lots of mold keys, make the box good, sturdy and Leakproof, and remember bubbles go up..:P

Lolly can best help with info on UK based suppliers, as for me I will be glad to offer not just you, but anyone any insights I can. I hold no secrets...('sept maybe that one thing)...*blush* It's the whole "teach a person to fish" thing with me.

It's both maddening and rewarding.

Matt any compliments are well deserved. Your stuff is a work of art, from your sabre to your molding skills :P

Sid that paticular PR is mainly Aluminium, the Spas cage was from a cheap airsoft as I happened to have a couple laying around and the grip is made from MDF as I didnt have any nice wood handy at the time.
Theres some bits I've always wanted to redo (i was pushed for time to finish it for an event) but after seeing Stefans I might as well just make a whole new one from scratch.

I'll have another spare that way too.

When I was in the UK I used to get my resins etc from a small company called Trylon as they were about 10 minutes from where I used to live. They generally supply schools etc with general craft materials so have things like ABS and styrene for vac forming too. Was just convenient, probably not the best price either so Lolly's links will be much better. In fact when I get back to the UK I'll be checking them out myself :)
