The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Does anyone no how to change the gear box
in a UTG CQB Navy seal utg5 airsoft sub machine gun.
Also, is there anyone that repairs these guns in the New York area?
The gun is about 3 weeks old and the gear box is shot.
I'll be charged for shipping both ways if I send it back.
Thanks,
Larry

Might want to give these folks a call.

AirsoftNY

When you say 'shot', could you be a bit more precise? Doesn't fire, double feeds, makes a grinding noise, makes a clacking noise, makes a screeching noise?

Typically you never need to "change" the mechbox in an AEG. The most common failure in an AEG that happens is a blown gear.

Giving us examples as to what it does or doesn't do would help out a lot, and possibly keep you from spending money needlessly.

Thanks for the replies.
It makes a kind of high pitch screeching noise
and doesn't fire.
Any help would be appreciated.

A screech, or a high pitched whine like the noise you'd imagine an all electric motorcycle would make?

If it's a whine, then I would guess a blown gear, but it might not be that bad.

Did you try backing off the hop up, and checking to see if it was jammed? BBs jammed in the barrel?

What kind of BBs were you shooting prior to the malfunction? name brand, or cheap generics?

Any chance of getting a sound clip or short video with sound?

Considering the gun in question is a UTG, and the high-pitched screech, I bet the motor adjustment screw backed itself out. This has happened on several UTG MP5's on the field I play at.

However getting the adjustment right is a bit tricky. The screw in question is on the bottom center of the pistol grip, a small set screw. It sounds like the motor is too low, so the pinion and bevel gears are grinding instead of meshing properly.

That was going to be my next suggestion. Good call Exo! :)

Getting the motor height just right can be a pain sometimes, but when it's finally right, put a drop of glue on it it lock the screw in place.

So Exo, what's the general concensus or opinion about the UTG AEGs by those in your area that have them?

You guys are awsome!!
I adjusted that screw a bit and the gun now shoots.
Still makes some noise so I'll keep tweaking it and
see what happens.
Thanks very much.
You really know your stuff .
I'm highly impressed!

Around here they have pretty good reviews. All the owners I know have been happy with them. In my opinion they make a great beginner AEG, especially for the cost. With a few internal tweaks they are up to TM quality, or slightly above. The only recommendations I've made for internals are a TM piston and piston head (or better), TM spring guide (or better), and of course metal bushings, a good re-shimming, and most importantly- some thread locker or nail polish on the motor height screw! The local airsoft shop has started putting nail polish on all the UTG MP5's they sell since it has been a recurrent problem.

As for adjusting motor height, it is a tricky task, but you want to get it to the point where it makes the least amount of screech and no grinding sound. If it's screeching it's too low, if it's grinding it's too high. I broke a pinion gear on a Systema Torque-Up motor due to the motor being too high, so don't overtighten it. Just go slowly, firing it on semiauto while you adjust it and when the screech starts to die down, stop. Listen for the most flat, consistent sound. If you remember what the gun sounded like new, that's your goal :)
