The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

OK, dont think i'm a complete moron...but i'm not to knowledgeable on Gas Airsoft guns. Does the can of gas fit into wherever the gas goes? Like, does the can of gas fit into the stock of the Remington M870 for example?

No. Typically, the only guns that operate like that are CO2 guns and some paintball guns. And they use small gas cylinders.

Most airsoft guns that are gas operated have a gas reservoir in the base of the magazine or in the stock. You then take the appropriate type of gas can and fill the gas reservoir kinda like you would using propane and zippo lighters.

Some airsoft gas guns, especially the old school ones, use a slim external cable which feeds gas from one or more gas canisters (typically toted around in a butt sac).

The Maruzen M870 has two methods. The type with a stock has a large gas reservoir in the stock and is non-removable. The type that has a pistol grip has a small removable gas reservoir in the pistol grip.

MIM placed theirs about in that space. Tom's adapter, while stronger it appears than MIM's mount or even GWII's design, sucks up a lot of available real estate in the shroud. I had originally planned on making mine shoot, but now I'm not so certain I can pull it off. Space really is limited in there. :(

ahhh ok got ya...so would you suggest the pistol grip version for the PR simply because it has the removable reservoir?

Depends on what you intend to use it for. If you're just using it to place inside a Spas12 cage, be rackable and non-firable, then either variant would do. If you want to make it firable... well you can't use the larger gas reservoir from the full stock one, and chances are you still can't use the smaller gas reservoir for the pistol grip version.

Also, assuming you can find one, you want the "Grip" version and NOT the "Shorty" version. The shorty has a rib that runs the length of the barrel, and is a pain in the a$$ to take off.

The pistol grip style foregrip is also a holy terror to get off the gun. Took me quite a while to get it off of there.

If you're not worrying about having it fire ever again, go with the solid stock or Grip versions. Much easier to mod.

hmmm...then i gotta re-think this...i REALLY want a fully functional airsoft version...could the resevouir be placed above the cage...behind the barrell vent? (roughly were nimmot has his adapter placed)

It may be too small....knowing my luck it probably is...but, does anyone know how the hell MIM did it?!

lol yea, back to the old argument.

accually i was thinking puttin an mini batter in the stock...but thats me, wire it up the stock and have the battery sit on the inside of the shoulder piece...i wouldnt care anyway.

edit it:
i just had a thought...what if i took the grip resevoiur and placed its flat face right up agains the back of the spas cage..in front of the mag...in the SD shroud it looks like a really tight fit, but it might be worth a try?

again...just throwin another idea out there

Also, I don't think that the gas reservoir MIM used to power the M870 was the same reservoir as what comes with the M870. The MIM shroud is solid. There was only room for the M1A1 barrel (they mounted the GL directly onto the M1A1 barrel's forward handle attachment), and the specialized gas reservoir which appears to be a two part system in order to fit on either side of the barrel. Basically, don't expect to take the reservoir from the grip version of the M870 and fit it in the shroud.

If you really want to have the M870 fire, probably the best choice would be to use the CA870 (the spring version of the M870). Except it has a magazine that extends a bit out of the bottom of the M870's receiver.

Even if you are able to get the M870 to fire... where will you put the battery for the M1A1 AEG? And here we are full circle again on this age old arguement. I look forward to the day someone makes an AEG PR that has a rackable GL which fires. Until then... I'll settle for my AEG PR that's rackable.

Hmm... Well, the only issue I can see with that is the location of the trigger on the M870 would be pushed forward about 1-1.5 inches, kind of messing things up.

The Spas cage can possibly slide that much, especially if using Tom's new mount bracket, but not sure about the spacing at the back.

There's not much clearance between the back of the shotgun and the Thompson magazine itself. It might be possible, but if you arrange it that way, how will you add gas to the resevoir? The tank is filled via a small valve on the bottom of the tank.

Give me a couple days and I'll get some pics up showing this.

Unfortunately, the CA870 is designed to take a magazine that is shaped like one which takes up to 4 shells. But it is a regular BB magazine and does not take the Maruzen shells. This means that the CA870 does not take the shells at all. It is designed to take single BBs fed by the magazine. So, it can probably fire single shot BBs, provided you can figure out how to feed BBs to it.

There have been after-market parts made for other gas guns, that involve a presurized hose & remote cylinder (CO2) that are made to give higher volume & pressure (for some pistols and such).

Somone needs to engineer a micro GL shell like the mosquito molds M203 shells. :)
