The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Thanks guys...

Jesse...the clip is real..and the rubber buttplate pad....the rest...resin my friend..:)
It's Vagabond 3521-s formula..hard/high temp.
Black resin...very hard black resin..I love the stuff...a little talc in the mold gives it just the right sheen to look like anodized or moly coated metal. A glossy master with adequate mold release(not too much) will come out as glossy as can be...I plan to do the MG42 stock with it.

Anything that can be bolted to a real AR can be bolted to this one. Grips stocks forends etc.
I also have an 11 1/2" carbine barrel with the iron sight on it.

I need to find a rear sight, maybe a flip up to mount on the flat top.

A great many plans are in store for this little baby.
Like the OA93 or the ZM style side folder and pistol versions....SAWEEEEET!!! Oh and While I'm at it a belt fed too..

Oh and Jesse..I'll set aside one or two for "trade" purposes..;)

dude... nicely done!

So that's the color of the resin right out of the mold!?!! Nice! This is not pressure cast right? Are there any visible bubbles?... Because it looks really clean from here.

Thanks ! :D

Yep, that be the color and yes we have no pressure cast.
I try to design my molds so that any bubbles rise to parts of the kit that are either unseen or are trimmed off.

I'll post some extreme close ups when I get the chance.

If I had pressure cast and de-gas setup I'd be Dangerous!

"Getting there."

I have one more mold to make and more importantly, I need to somehow get my pressure chamber tested. The air compressor I have is way under powered, and the hose has a leak so the chamber won't pressurise.

Otherwise, it's going. Not as nice as yours to be certain, but not too bad for a first project. :)

Does anyone have any links to websites/pictures of the actual details of a pressure chamber etc to sort of give an idea of whats involved in building one.

Im pretty handy at building things and Im sure I justify it as a work project/expense

Just need a rough how2 to get me started.

But you didn't pressure cast any of the parts that we've seen so far right?

Do you have any close ups of the cast resin yet, Matt?

Very interested in the quality of the finer details, which look pretty damn good from the pictures I've seen so far. :)

-Alex

p.s. how strong is that resin? Would the parts made using that kind of resin be strong enough to handle skirmishing? That is... if they were made for "something" that was to be used for skirmishing... ?

Probably one of the EASIEST ways I've been told is the "Old Spraypaint Pot" method. For this to work all you need to do is cut off the paint stirring deals in the lit of the pot and make sure all your seals are working (not dried out/cracking).

You can't use quick curing resin either, you need something with about a 30 minute pot life so all the bubbles can be adequetly crushed.

It makes for slower turnaround times on your castings, but reduces those unsightly bubbles.

Matt, what's the gallon cost on that black resin you're using?

The resin comes in either quarts or gallons...2 parts so thats actually 2 quarts or gallons.

A 2quart kit is, $27.40

2 gallon, $78.20

10 gallon is $297.50

Its a fast cure...very fast...2minutes or less working time.
You have to be quick on the draw if you want to pressurize it.
Presurizing does work well with the quick cure but you have to have practice at it to get it to work well for you.

I have an old, rather large pressure cooker I use but the seal is terrible and I cannot locate a replacement. Pressure cookers are very handy in that they lock with one twist...unlike some paint pots that have three or four thumb screws.

Heres a pic...

Not many bubbles at all. all the bubbles rise to portions of the parts that either mate up to , or are covered by other parts.

The black resin is pretty tough. Stronger than the white stuff at least..;)

*I* can hardly believe he's not getting any/many bubbles considering what the mixed viscosity is like (according to the company when I ordered my samples).

Yeah I rule don't I.LOL...:P

Thanks Guys, My lack of "proper tools" has lead me to a few techniques. That can only be called poor mans casting tricks.

I think a well-planed mold is a big part...Remember. Bubbles go up! After all I’m still learning.
I use 1/4-inch plexi scraps for mold boxes, due to their rigidity and ability to stay true. Having a mold blow out isn't fun. And I haven't had that trouble since I started using plexi.

Using good silicone and not rushing is important too.
When I'm ready to pour silicone I always brush on a layer and let it settle first. You can pop air bubbles and force the silicone into the surface detail using compressed air. I then pour the silicone on slowly in 1/2-inch layers, letting each layer settle and release what bubbles it can before continuing, till the piece is covered. After making hundreds of molds, you can learn to anticipate trouble spots and troublesome shapes. Thusly you try something different each time until you get the perfect method.

Notice that I tried to obscure the MFG stamp and the SN but to the credit of the silicone. (heh and my discredit) a ghost image still appeared.

I don’t want Bushmaster getting mad at me and I sure as hell don’t want replicas with my AR's serial number on it running around. LOL It will have to be sanded.

I'm still working on this thing but I'd say it’s for the most part complete. I just need to get QD rear sight and some kind of decent sighting device for it. I may go for some kind of holo sight since that’s what all the fashionable SF operators use these days..;)

Just poured test samples from the 3 samples that I got from them. The mixed viscosity isn't even CLOSE to as bad as it sounded from their verbal description. I'm curious as to what the actual numbers would be, but unfortunately the sheets they sent with them don't have any "vital statistics" like you get with the Smooth-On products :(

Guess we'll see how they feel when the test pieces come out of the molds ;)

Yeah I'm not sure what the stats are and what the equivalent smooth on products are but that 3521-s has good penetration. I just poured a mould for some 1/6 scale gun parts and they came out very well...amazingly well for the size of the mold, the resin viscosity and the quick kick time of the resin...not too shabby really. It's rather bubble resistant apparently. The only bubbles are from trapped air, and not bubble in the resin. So you really have to work on getting your molds designed so that voids are purged of air in the pouring process.

One side open top molds are fantastic when cast using this resin.

I'll post some examples when I can.

Yeah well I gots parts...and casting more every day..;)

I'm going to go pick up a RIS of some sort.
For now I think a picantinny rail mount bolted on all four sides of the free float tube would suffice.

I am also molding a QD carry handle/A2 sight that fits quite well.
Also a flip up tactical A2 rear sight.

Oh yes and I will try and honor requests for specific attachments provided I can locate parts to mold off of....and procure them at a reasonable price or borrow them.

Does the resin get shipper to you precolored or is the color added by you thru dye?
