The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The venue was perfect. I like the idea of starting as one unit and then splitting into squads. I'd add that we should pre-determine a time and location to re-form for group photo op/evac.

The Westin has the benefit of a very good AC system. Even when it was thronging with people, the AC kept up and it was nice and cool.
I often went their to cool off and people watch.

This, for me, makes it an obvious choice for the colony sweep. (though I missed it this year due to needed a long, cold shower after the parade. Running around the group in circles taking pictures was.... moist)

Yes, it's hard on the Xenos- as Sean said, walking the parade in a rubber oven has got to just plain SUCK!
How long does it take to recover Gareth? Historically, we've always scheduled the Colony Sweep the afternoon of the Parade. For many of us, Saturday is Colonial Marine Day. The Parade, Sweep and Dinner.

That said, we've GOT to figure out a way for the Xenos to participate, we could schedule the Sweep later, perhaps 3-3:30?

The Xeno head does make us instantly recognizable. I marched one year with one on a pole, the crowd loved it. "This time we win!" lol

Perhaps we could "recover" a Alien head and cheer our trophy? Or something like that?

I'm probably not the best person to ask since I take several days to recover from the parade specifically; donning the costume on the Saturday night after the parade is really tough, and this year was far worse. I don't think I will attempt the parade next year.

However, 3pm would give the others a chance get out of costume and nap.

Next years attendance of any UK bugs is a bit up in the air at the moment I do know Sam was absolutely wrecked after the parade but she was ill.

The parade did kind of end me, but as Stew said, I was sick this year.

Next year I plan on getting ill about the start of July so its all out of the way!

Amber's in for a sweep

That's a good idea. Too bad I usually wear my prop watch that doesn't actually work, because it looks like the one used in the movie.

I hate that I missed it last year. I left for A/C and food at the end of the parade. I'm planning to bring some of my gear this year. So I'd love to be part of a colony sweep.

Will we be doing a photo shoot in addition to the sweep, or taking pictures while we move?

Colony Sweeps are pretty fun. I'm looking forward to doing one again this year. I'm bringing my flak vest version of my LT, unless I can get things done on my armor.

Ok, I'm marching with the colour guard in this years parade, so I'll need a bit of time to get my butt out of my service Cs and into Amber. Is there any further information on what time and where the factions of the sweep will be meeting and or moving to?

We try to make every accommodation for the xenos to rest up between the parade and the sweep. We recognize that it's asking a lot of the folks in the rubber ovens to turn out for the sweep in the afternoon after the ordeal of the parade in the morning, so we definitely want to make it as easy on them as we can, to encourage as many of them as possible to show up :). The more xenos we have, the better a show we can put on. You guys and gals really are the rock stars of the Colony Sweep!

So, all of that said- we usually try to meet up in the early afternoon. The folks leading the sweep typically meet up early to test out the route and make any last minute changes that need to be made. The goal is usually to have the sweep kick off around 3 PM on Saturday - this strikes a balance between giving folks a chance to rest after the parade, and giving those who need it time to clean up and get dressed for the dinner.

If anyone thinks they're going to need that time to be pushed one way or the other, please let us know here.

3PM sounds great to me. I won't be taking part in the parade - but I'll be there for the colony sweep!

As far as the "where", we usually meet up at the fan table. Last year the sweep was relocated to the Westin on short notice due to the crowds in the other hotels becoming just completely unmanageable; it was something of a desperate Hail Mary, but it ended up working out well. The inside of the Westin, with its open stairways and overlapping walkways, really is well-suited to letting people see us as we skulk around, and the hotel staff themselves loved us, apparently. We had quite a nice audience following us around by the end of the sweep.

Also... Lots of corners for xenos to hide behind. :xeno:

Unless anyone had any objections, I see no reason not to plan for the Westin again, this year.

Transmission incoming, Marines! I'm going to try to get some more concrete info posted soon, hopefully this weekend, so watch for a First Post update soon.

If anyone could help me track down an image of the Westin floor plan for everyone's reference in the meantime, that'd be super. :delta:

I didn't even know that was a thing they were doing, now. That would be fantastic.
