I have always wanted the M56 Smart Gun... So, where do I start!?!
I was thinking of making the prop myself, but I'm at a loss as how to go about getting the armor and stedicam support for it.
Hell, the whole costume... Where would I start. Time and cost are the least of my worries. It will take me a while to complete it, but I want it to kick some major xenomorph ass!

A great place to start would be your base gun. Your best bet is Guardian Matsuo's MG42. I know from experience that Matt's work is pure art. Having Matt's MG42 is a great start, but keep in mind the smartgunner is a difficult position to accurately replicate in the USCM world without spending an arm and a leg. Many parts are getting harder and harder to find, but that goes with almost everything in this hobby of ours.

Kinda funny comin' from a guy who'll wind up spending damn near fifteen hundred dollars to complete a costume.

There is also a wooden version for sale through a company in the UK called Relics. I have one, and I'm fairly pleased with it's details. It could be better, but one can expect much when the medium is wood.
