The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi All,

You'll be glad to hear that we now have a nice little dedicated server to host AL on, compared with the slightly inconsistent shared hosting that we were using previously. I've been benchmarking the new server and it's 3-10x faster than the existing server depending on what numbers you look at. Also, since I have total control of the server, I'll be able to give warning of planned outages (updates etc) that happen at the whim of the hosting provider at the moment. I will be maintaining the old shared-server hosting as a standby for disaster recovery.

If you find any quirks or issues over the next few weeks, or cannot access AL at all after tomorrow morning (when the outage should end), email me on webmaster@alienslegacy.com

Wish us luck!

Awesome Gareth, thank you for looking after us.

Now Abe, you can help Gareth but don't get in the way - and NO acid anywhere near the server do you hear me mister? You know what happened last time with the Sulaco and the fire and the baldy men and everything.

;)

OK. Hold on to your hats. We're going down.

After that, there will be a period of a few hours where AL is read-only. Any changes made to your profile etc won't be retained on the new server ...

Some people are still being sent to the old server - just luck of the draw who's DNS updates fastest. Everyone will be here by midnight.

That said, it's always a good idea to overestimate how long tasks such as this take! ;)

Capt. James T. Harris: How long to move the server over?

Scotty Gareth: Six hours, General.

Harris: You have one hour!

G: Aye, Captain.

:)

BTW, if you have problems being logged out often then clear your browser cookies - the cookies from the old server won't work nicely with the new server.

Chat will come "shortly". I want to make sure the main board is stable is first.

Dumped all cookies in lieu of new ones, it's a freshness you can taste! Actually stayed logged in for more than an hour!

Now about that chat feature....

That's perfectly normal for a woman of your age dear. :)

Again thanks to Gareth for setting all this up, my only knowledge of servers are those girls who bring you beers in bars!

You should be so lucky, I had to sing Soft Kitty to him.

I've had to do that three times tonight. :)

On my PC isn't so bad, as I can just delete this forum's cookie(s), but the iPad only allows deletion of all sites cookies, so I have had to recall all other login details several times tonight. :D

OK. Scorched earth. I've deleted the sessions table.

Everyone will need to login again, but hopefully it will fix these issues.

Yeah I had to do that last night, and again this morning. It's annoying but I'm hoping only a temporary problem.

OK. Chatroom: GO!

I haven't got the chat acceleration server to work properly (bizarrely it will work if all users log in manually, but not when logging in via cookies from the main board). When I get it working, it should give IM/MSN etc style instant response.

But, even without it, it should be much faster on the new server.
