The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I posted this on Scifihero, but was directed to come here.

I bought a replic M41A Pulse Rifle at Dragon*Con, its cast resin.

I am wickedly happy with it, but would like to touch up and change some of the paint... Primarily because I don't plan on having this as a costume piece and more as a 'display' piece for me to gawk at in my own office.

My problem is I really have no idea what types of paint work and what specific colors to shoot for, does anyone have some direction for me?

Acryllic? Enamel? What brands are good and where can I get them?

What color should I get for the shroud? Olive Drab? I acknowledge that it is Brown Bess in the movies, but frankly I am not a huge fan of that color and in the expanded universe the shroud has been painted dozens of other colors. I am looking for a 'military green' and curious if this is the 'Olive Drab' everyone refers to.

Should I get some newspaper to cover the pieces and airbrush them or is it safer to paint by hand?

Thanks in advance!

It really depends what look you're going for.

I have a resin Pulse Rifle in a lighter green, but OD Green is the nicest next to the Brown Bess.

I'd mask the gun parts with newspaper, simply get the color in aerosol and give light coats until you're happy with it.
Just be sure to get in all the corners without overloading it.

Then for weathering you can 'dry brush' dipping your paint brush handle in acrylic silver modellers paint and scrapping it down the sides and corners to give the effect of weathering.
It's very simple and gives a great effect.

spatcave.com has a tutorial on painting the Pulse Rifle (this is where your Pulse Rifle came from) that is really great.

Why don't you post a pic before you get started. There might be some other tweaks you can do before you pain. Plus, it's like porn for us seeing pulse rifles b4 they are all painted up.
