Post subject:  Complete novice with a million PR kit questions! (Pics on 4)

...and I've been told that this is the place to get them answered.

At the moment I'm not planning on the full uniform or anything (but never say never) however... today I bagged myself a sweet PR kit off the RPF and now I need help because, well, I'm knida new. Maybe the rest of the kit will follow but for now i want to focus on this rifle.

I've searched the forums as best I can (while waiting for my membership approval) and with such a huge amount of questions finding answers in amongst all these threads is rather daunting so please be gentle with me if I'm asking questions that have been answered a million times before. Anyway here goes:

This is the kit I got today:

Image

I'm told by the seller that it's: "A Matsucorp cold cast aluminium kit with sd studio's metal stock, barrel vents and barrel holder." The kit included, cold cast shrouds, cold cast Thompson with metal detailed bits and all moving part. Cold grenade launcher which actually racks.

My first question is about assembly. Basically HOW? Assume for a moment that it's been stripped down, a little sanding work done (it's already VERY good), painted the correct colours and fitted with a counter (I'll get to that later) and is ready for final reassembly. I can see obvious solutions for mounting the stock, the barrel is threaded so will just screw directly into the Thompson body. The heat sink will screw/glue on to the grenade launcher just fine. Finding a way to screw the barrel holder down looks tricky as there isn't much space between the fixing point and the collar the barrel passes through but I'll work something out but how do I securely fix the grenade launcher part of the kit to the rest of the gun? They slot together but I cant see any way of fixing it really securely? Are there instructions for the Matsucorp kit I can download somewhere or am I missing some sort of bracket (everything I got is in that above first picture)
Image

2nd Question: Where can I get a cheap LCD ammo counter (static is fine) and how much should I expect to pay? I saw some on a site for about $30, does anyone know of a UK supplier?

3rd Question: Paint Colours. I have read some debate over the shroud colours, am I correct in thinking the "Bess Brown" colour is screen accurate and the "Drab Olive" is more how it looked on film? Personally having seen pics of both I prefer the Drab Olive. What are the other colours of the gun, is it all Matt Black apart from the shroud? Which bits need to be left silver? Is there a definitive detail on what bits need which colour?

4th Question: Thompson magazines. My friend has a replica Thompson, we tried the mag in my kit today, it's too long but the little cap that covers the bottom of the kit fits perfectly to his mag so do people just cut magazines down to suit? Where can I get a replica Thompson magazine on it's own? Is it just replica weapons that you have trouble importing in to the UK or do you also have problems with magazines too?

That will do for now, I'm sure I'll have loads more as the build progresses so expect to see me around and keep an eye out for photo updates.

Thanks in advance for all your questions and I hope I've not made too much of a nuisance of myself already with all these "n00b" questions!

static ammo counters you can make yourself maplin sell the displays and i have built one myself before cost me a few quid
colour wise the grenade launcher some go black some go dark grey its all down to preference, shroud colours olive drab is good i like the nato olive drab colour
for the mag on mine i got a hi cap thompson airsoft mag and cut it down to suit
as for attaching the grenade launcher i am not sure myself but matsuo does come on here and tommin i believe does adapters to fit them

Thanks for the speedy reply! Hopefully matsuo will pop in and offer some advice!

I'll give the ammo counter parts a look on maplpin but having no electrical know-how I might not be able to get it to display the correct number! :D

Thompson mags come in two different sizes.
Real Thompsons used 20 and 30 round mags, and it is the shorter 20 round mags that are used in the PR.
If you are after real Thompson mags for this then they can be got pretty easily for around £10-£15 and are not against the law or anything.
Try here http://www.rytonarms.co.uk/shop/shop.php in the US Thompson SMG's section
Soldier of Fortune also sell them.

The airsoft equivalent mag is (I think) the 190 round hi-cap, but from what I can tell, these do not come cheap.

Cool, thanks for the info man, I was worried I was going to have to take a hacksaw to one of my mate's mags. SOF had some 20 round green ones for a tenner so I snapped one up, guess it doesn't matter what colour it is as you wont see it!

Yeah, that would be great. I can price up the parts then and give it a go myself!

With regards to mounting the grenade launcher, you have some fun as you have a mix of parts. On a solely Matsucorp kit, the GL would be screwed to the resin Thompson receiver right at the back (between the counter and the aluminium trapezoid), and screwed to the barrel vent/triangle (all one piece) so it hangs from the barrel at the front.

Hopefully Matt will come in a chime with some suggestions, as he has built hybrid SD/Matsucorp kits himself.

You have a blinding PR kit, there btw :D

Thanks everyone, it's good to hear I got a "good" kit rather than a duffer. It was a complete spur of the moment thing... guy on RPF says he has a kit for sale... within a few mins I had been convinced by my mate that I should just get it as I've always wanted one... a PM was sent and it was a done deal. Even better was the guy was only about 40 miles away so I nipped over and collected it!

£4 for a counter? Perfect... I look forward to your guidance (and I'll be sure to do something smart with the wiring so I don't have the same problem!

hey it is a blinding kit
whereas mine was notorious for being crap but some persuading with a sander made it work

Thanks jason, I'm not a full UKG member, but my clearance photos for my Ghostbuster will be going in as soon as my Proton Pack arrives so that will get me a proper membership, but it's not a Star Wars costume so wont be a true "buckethead" Hehehehe!

Is it still worth me signing up as I currently don't have any plans for doing the rest of the costume or troop as a Marine, just want to get the rifle built up at this point! I mean, I'll never say "never" but just not right now! ;)

Just to be clear, the main Matsuo parts are not cast aluminium, they're resin.

That's a very good kit, though, so well done on getting it. 8)

Yeah, it's resin with aluminium particles in it, right? Feels nice and cold like a metal weapon... I love it! I want it done now but I'm going to resist the urge to rush it as I want it to be "just so" I am a little worried about mounting the GL to the rest of the gun, I'm sure it's doable but I worry about how robust it will be after I've put it together!

Post subject:  Re: Complete novice with a million PR kit questions! (UK)

Yup, ali dust in the resin. I have a set of those shrouds myself. 8)

Contact Matsuo via his site to enquire about mounting the GL to the receiver, in case he doesn't spot this thread on his infrequent visits here. :)

i would suggest that you get some very fine grade steel wool and polish the shrouds :D Image
this are the same aluminumresin shrouds you have, bottom one is polished 8)
its really easy and fast to do, and the outcome is amazing

Whoa, they do look great polished but surely a rough surface is better if I'm going to paint it?

PVB, Thanks man, I'll head off there to sign up... I'll let him know that the AL guys pointed me in his direction too! ;)

Oh, avatar added, it's "GB Me" Like I said: No CM Uniform...yet!

Sweet!

Right, so... where do I get my paint from? Anyone got any decent sources? I have decided on the Olive Drab... is that the sort of colour I can get from Halfords or do I need to find a specialist military paint website! (Told you I'm a novice!)

Discussion about sourcing spray paints. A few suggestions in there.

Got to hand it to you treasure... last of the Matsucorp resin guns... Real piece of history...

Fist rule of working on a Matsucorp PR is that if you see a screw or bolt...take it out.

I dont use any glue except maybe to lock the barrel in place once positioned.

Remove the shrouds, keep track of the screws as some are different lengths. A plastic organizer is preferable but an egg carton will suffice.
All the mounting plate screws are 6-32 size using a 5/64" allen wrench, the main bolts holding the shroud halves toogether are 10-32,s those require a 1/8" wrench.

To mount the GL there should be a little part in there somewhere that loks like this:

Image

That slips into the barrel support slot on the thopmpson reciever.

I position the GL in place and drill two holes through and through to go into the GL . Make sure the bolt is forward on the shotgun.

Image

Let me know if you need anything else.

BTW all the resin except for the Grip is aluminum resin, all the fire control parts of the thompson are cast metal.
The bolt handle is turned aluminum.

I suggest washing all resin parts before painting, then once cured use fine sand paper to expose your high wear spots and then use super fine 0000 grade steel wool to bring out the shine. The cast metal will need a light scuffing of 200 grit or higher for the paint to stick well.
Cast metal may contain some lead... DO NOT EAT
