The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi guys, first time poster... I've been an Alien and Aliens fan since about 1990 and have always wanted to sculpt one of these. One day I just started building the armature for it and the rest is history... almost. I still have a lot of work to do but I'd like to know what you all think of it so far.

Okay, seriously though, that's some amazing sculpting sir. What type of clay are you using?
Thank you for posting those photos, can't wait to see updates.

Wow! Fantastic work Phillip!

I love the way you've changed the mouth to more closely resemble the Alien³ version, although it does still look like the Aliens animatronic version with the lips (I'm thinking of the scene just as Burke gets it).

Keep us posted with your progress,

Harry

Thank you so much guys! I've been really working hard on this and it's good to know fellow fans approve of the progress so far! I just stumbled across this site recently and I'm glad I did.

The clay I'm using is a student grade clay called "klean klay" medium... it's pretty cheap stuff and it's oil based but can be smoothed with water...? Weird but it works for me.

My brother is to thank for that... he said," You think you're finished there? nuh uh!" so I added more detail until he stopped bugging me about it.
Harry Harris wrote:

Yes, I was going for the puppet look in the case of not only the lips, but also the tops of the arms and where the "loose tubes" on the sides will attach as well... On the stunt masks they go from jaw to head. On the hero puppet, they go from jaw to neck. You can see in the pics the points to which they will be glued after casting.

Believe me, jokes aside I did start again several times before I decided it was OK to keep going to the end. :)

They might have been the quicker way... if acid didn't inhibit the cure of silicone rubber. 8)

I've been going thru and watching past featurettes & commentaries from the Quad & Legacy box sets. In the special features of ALIENS from the Legacy box set it shows them sculpting the chestburster & the Queen. I thought of you immediately Philip. If you haven't seen it you may want to check it out. I don't know if this featurette is on the Alien Anthology Blu-Ray box set?

Oh yeah you know I have that... I used the behind the scenes of Aliens for reference a lot! I almost broke the DVD player from having it on pause so much. I wish they would release Aliens with the all black cover and just the blue font like the old VHS... oh well.

Here are the latest progress pics of it almost done... I still have a lot of work to do mostly on the back spine and tubes under ribs and behind shoulders...
