The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Awesome, I'll keep this thread posted every now and again with updates as it progresses, and maybe you guys can pipe up if there are any glaring errors on it; and when ready, I'll post it in the Base PX.

Should be fairly quick to do (hopefully), geometry seems alot more straightforward than the Nostromo... :D

I'll update with a new pic or two at the end of next week. :D
Not sure on the length yet, but I'll be refering to the Aliens Technical Manual for that kind of technical info and will try to keep to that.

I'm guessing he means the length of the blueprint itself? :)

Please do not use the Tech Manual as a reference for the dimensions of the Sulaco. I estimate the length listed in the manual is only about 50% what it should be. 385 meters is the stated length in the Tech Manual iirc and that just doesn't work based on the size of the dropship bay doors. The dropship bay doors would only be about 15 meters long, which would be a problem for a 25+ meter long dropship to fit through. The 1/2400 scale Halcyon model is a approximately 30cm long making is approximately 730 meters in length overall. 770 meters would make it exactly twice the size stated in the Tech Manual. As a by-product the mass of the vessel has to be increased proportionally as well. I would say that unless the Sulaco is made of extremely light-weight materials it should mass between 600,000 and 650,000 metric tons at a minimum and in actuality would be much greater.

I'd appreciate it if someone would check my math to make sure I haven't botched my calculations. It just seems obvious to me that the Tech Manual cannot be correct.

Thanks,

Todd

Good point.
I actually had to do some tweaking to the Nostromo length too, some figures for that were that the ship was around 800ft in length, but as myself and others found over on Propsummit, there's no way the ship could be that length as the Narcissus would have been absolutely tiny. So I drew up a Narcissus outline and compared that to the Nostromo i'd drawn up, and some 'full size set' scenes such as when Dallas, Lambert and Kane leave the ship and are standing next to the undercarriage, as well as some blurry blueprints of the interiors. I then got a best guess figure for the ship dimensions from those.
I'll probably end up doing the same for Sulaco, using the Dropship.
Haven't had a chance this week to do much, my hours have been cut once again and my wages cut, so I've been trying to sort out other things. I'll be updating my blog I just set up too which is hydride-ion.com with news as well as here very soon.
Got some new Ripley pencil-artwork I've been doing that I'll also post. 8)

I was able to extricate a completed 1/2400 scale Sulaco out of storage yesterday evening and measured its length. It came in at approximately 32 cm, which calculates out to approximately 768 meters. Coincidentally, 768 meters is almost exactly double the 385 meters offered in the Tech Manual. Therefore, I recommend using 770 meters and suppose that who ever came up with 385-meter figure, whether it was Lee Brimmicombe-Wood or someone else, made a straightforward math miscalculation for the length of the Sulaco. Practically the same result is achieved using the dropship that is included with the 1/2400 scale Sulaco model. Of course, that is using the dropship length presented in the Tech Manual consequently your mileage may vary. :)

768 meters; that’s 2520 ft, over twice the length of the Nostromo. That’s if the scale given on the Halcyon model is accurate.

Does anyone know what the length of the ‘mock-up’ full size dropship was that was used for the full size hanger bay set in the movie?
I don’t know if Harry has an original blueprint for this; if so maybe he could kindly read a dimension off of for it so it can be compared to the length in the tech manual; then maybe the length can be used to compare it to the length of the drop ‘hatch’ on the Sulaco? That way it’d be pretty darn close to be able to be sure of the size.

I solved the same problem calculating my scale of the paper sulaco...and had the same result...the USS SULACO must have over 700meters in lenght (my 3d model is calculated as 731.6 meters in lenght)

Hey Jan, nice to see you here. I built one of your Wipeout models the other week, very cool!
I’ve reached pretty much the same conclusion; the tech manual just isn’t right here with the scale, so may as well be the 731.6 meters (2400 ft) and call it done. That way it’ll be consistent with your model too.

Here’s a new progress pic. I had a flurry of work, at work to do that kept me busy (but away from this), now back to looking for work (though I can now spend more time on this again).

Just continuing to block in detail right now in chunks, the particle beam gun on the sides near the top as well as other areas will probably need rescaling; I’ll do that once it progresses more. Nostromo went through the same process. ;-)
