So I got in one of Matsuo's excellent welders along with our PR and was really impressed. Since I have a tin of brown bess I figured I might as well repaint it. I used an awesome behind the scenes photo posted by Harry for ref.

After painting it BB... I was a little disappointed. It just made the welder very flat and boring. I am usually all about being as screen accurate as possible, and in the shot Harry posted you can't really see any weathering, but I felt the welder just needed something else. Considering all the smoke and slag and spitting-sparking metal... I would like to think that the welder would be pretty grungy so I went over it, especially the nozzle side, with a heavy wash. I am a little torn because I feel like you really shouldn't "add to" but I do think it looks better this way and while Matsuo's rendition of BB is VERY close, I love knowing that this is the actual BB color. Also noticed... everyone seems to use a clip and D rin type attachment for the welder, but from the photo Harry posted, Hicks welder is just on a cord... anyone hanging their that way?

Personally, i don't think i will carry mine. But use it as a prop for my collection.

But if i do carry it, i will put it in my haversack.

I find alot of our members put clips on them and then attach it to there utility belts.

My welder has a webbing and buckle/clip attachment to a similar webbing on my belt, but it really swings around when I walk any distance, so worry it'll get broken by hitting the base of my armour or something.



I'll probably just keep it as a prop or for the odd photoshoot.

I have mine on a D-ring and clip as well- but I haven't carried my welder in years. Much like Steve (PVB) said, it bangs around too much and I'm afraid it might get damaged. The shield is particularly brittle.

Nice! Did you customize the nozzle, or is that Matt's work?

Someone here once suggested attaching a belt clip similar to what you would find on a tape measure. I like this idea, but worry it would rubb against ones armor and cause more weathering than I would like.

I would love to take credit for the nozzle but that is all Matt's excellent work. I left the nozzle as it came because Matt did such a cool job on it. And not to imply Matt did a bad job on the rest of the paint. He actually did a pretty cool and subtle weathering job but I really wanted the base coat to be BB.

In regard to wearing the welder... I fully expect sooner or later the flip up shield will come off... but if you go back and look... it appears that some of the photos that some of the welders lost their shield during the movie too... Such is life... If Mirax ends up hating the welder banging around... to the PX it will go!

That's the problem with having such amazingly cool props.... You don't want to take them out!!
TV/film props only have to last a few takes, whereas ours actually have to be better built so they last a lifetime.

It was some of the UKCM round ADC's one night, who found Hick's welder actually clips to his armour straps. I reckoned it was a simple affair, like on the tape measures.
Hudson's does hang on a loop of string. However, it could just be that same clip, but clipped to the loop.

Is there a photo for this? The only two pics I have seen are the ones attached (found on this board).

Our reasoning was extrapolated from repeatedly watching the film on frame advance, using ADC's ma-HOO-ssive projection screen.

Watch very closely the moment in the Extended Edition, when Hudson and Vasquez go Hamster Hunting. They cross eachother just outside the first door and, for one frame, her shoulder lap shows up his welder. You can clearly see what looks to be a strap, rather than a bit of Paracord.

Also - Look closely in welderclip001.jpg above - See the Welder looks to be hung from a half-inch wide strap attached to the belt?


At varying points, you see Hicks's welder 'on' his armour straps (several different ones), in a fashion most commonly seen when something has a clip.
We were unable to notice any actual clip, hence the guess that it's one of the small, basic types.
