The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I have a Nostromo pistol kit that I purchased from Morgan13 a few years ago and the other day I got to thinking. I wanted a cool way to display it that would also act as storage/transport if I ever wanted it. As is common with weapons, I figured a gun case would work the best.

I've drawn up a few ideas, the bottom one was suggested by a person over on the RPF.

None of the info, colors or stickers are set in stone, these are just what I've come up with so far. I put Kane's info on it because, much like the space suits they wore, they might have weapons there were directly responsible for. The designation for the gun is completely of my own making, this to can be changed if what I have sounds to hokey.

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. My ideas seem flat, there are so many possibilities yet I can't think of many!

The last design is my favourite though I'd change the red cross thing on the back as on the white background it makes me think of a first aid kit rather than a weapon. Maybe swap it out for a big yellow caution triangle.

I would say the bottom left one, off the top of my head i can't think what that symbol means on the bottom right one , Ron Cobb did do a chart explaining all the symbols used on the ship

I think that's supposed to represent mother/the Nostromo as a whole, sort of a "if found, return too:" kinda thing.

The more proper symbol would probably be th e one for "laser", although I don't know if this pistol would be a laser, or some sort of rail gun. Obviously if it's some sort of rail gun, a laser symbol wouldn't be appropriate. We have yet to see a proper laser being used in any of the movies, so that should probably be discounted. That would also probably be too much of a weapon for a simple towing vehicle/refinery platform to have on-board.

The red and white checker board pattern symbol was for the hypersleep chamber (crew quarters) on board the Nostromo.

There was an "in" joke because the symbol looked similar to Purina's Dog Chow logo-

Image

...the joke being that "Xeno Chow" was located "in the hypersleep chamber".

I think there was an actual symbol for the weapons locker aboard the Nostromo (I'll check my Quad disc tonight if I can).

Which begs the question- if Kane had a weapon... were there more than one pistol on the entire ship? And if there was, why didn't they use it against the Alien?

But I don't want to hijack this thread!

Save that discussion for the various musings threads we have going about the films. 8)

DSB- I like the direct look of the first white example- just with a different symbol on the reverse side.

Ron Cobb's book 'Colorvision' has a couple of good images of the Semiotic Standard with all the different symbols and stuff. The checker symbol means hazard/warning. There's 31 symbols in all, including ones for Laser, Photonic System (Fiberoptics), Astronic System (Electronics), and High Radioactivity...but none for a weapons locker.

Yup Space Jockey's right-

This is the best pic my Google-fu could find. The checker board does indeed say "Hazard/Warning" so it actually fits perfectly with your concept Bob!

Fear of making holes in the hull maybe? They never really tried to kill the thing on the ship, the whole plan being drive it to an airlock and blow it into space.

Personally I'd advise against anything that says Gun, Pistol, Weapon etc if you are transporting.
Display is fine, but you might get hassled over the contents out & about.

And I like the bottom-left design best :)

Hey Spacejockey/Graham, good to hear from you on this! Would you happen to have scans of the signs from that book you mentioned?

And from what I recall seeing in photos and such, there were atleast two pistols. And I too assumed they didn't use them on the ship due to fears of hull breach/decompression.

Any other suggestions?

Case color?

Gun designation?

Actually I think the 3rd one from the top is 'weightless environment' and the last one on the middle row looks to be 'weightless environment, space suit required'!

I did see a much larger version of this chart many years ago but I didn't have a camera with me and I didn't make any notes either. Gah!

Here's another question.

Should I make up some tools or do-dads to have in the case with the gun, or just have the gun by itself?

I was thinking something like a cleaning kit, or dissasembly tools?

Hmmm... I rather like the orange cases because it really helps indicate the potentially dangerous nature of the contents, but the white is more in keeping with the decor of the Nostromo. But there again the orange would stand out against that and be a clear indicator. The white case also tends to look like a medical case - even without the Purina Alien Chow emblem. And that - BTW was created by Ron Cobb as a an in-joke: the crew is alien chow. (Thanks to Maledoro over at Alien Experience for refreshing my memory on who added the emblem to the Nostromo decor.)

My 2 cents are use the orange case with a combination of art from the bottom most two designs. This will keep the case from looking too benign and potentially like something Ash would carry and more like a weapon that poses a potential threat if misused.

...I was going to try and put this into words, but I think a visual would work better.

Perhaps something like this?

Oooh, I didn't know Kane's gun was also Dr. Evazen's gun. Interesting.

Anyway, I like the orange one. The white kind of makes it look like first aid equipment or something. The orange I guess could be argued that it looks like a signal flare box, but it's still better than white.

Hello Dropshipbob! Sorry I didn't see this post earlier. I don't have access to a scanner right now but in the meantime here's a chart someone produced a long while ago...unfortunately I don't know who. The colors are a little different on some of the signs.... haven't yet compared Ron Cobb's images or this one to the movie yet to see if any last minute changes i.e. color were made. The orange box idea is superb! Very very close to completing the Nostromo exterior blueprints by the way, I remember previously you asked about that...keep finding little last minute things to tweak here and there...

Shawn is currently working on a new version of it at the moment. Last I heard is that he had a couple of more parts to locate and then he could make new molds. 8)
