Now that we can get a great welder the sudject of belt clip came up.

It was mentioned that Chris has a great way of attaching one does anyone have pictures to illustrate his system? It would help thoose that want to do this modification.

As seen above in Darren's pic. Chris used a Rifle Sling swivel screw, slipped a D-Ring onto it. Then stitched a small strip of Nylon strapping to a Quick Release Clip. That attached to the male end of the Clip, which was attached to a loop that would have been slipped onto your belt.

Great system, easy to make yourself for about $8 in materials. The only downside is that the welder flops around when attached.

That's a "Covertec" clip.





Pretty good suggestion! All you have to do is attach the "wheel" somewhere onto your welder with a single screw.

What kind of resin have you been screwing into?

I'm just always worried that if I overtighten a screw, because resin can be brittle it's going to thread easily.
I managed to bugger one of the screw posts on my Matsu shoulder lamp by overtightening it

Screwing resin.....

Pick the size screw you are going to use

Pick one with threads as wide as you can get
the finer the threads the more likely you are to strip it.

I use wood screws because of the thread width.

Pre drill the hole

There is no tap for wood screws so just screw it in
and out until it gets all the way in. This way you won't
break or strip anything....

I've done this many times and it works...

The only time screws in resin will strip or cause problems is if it's really cheap, brittle resin, or if you don't pre-screw the holes.

And I love to pre screw the holes.

Didn't the welders as worn in the movie flop around a lot?

Of course, the flopping may not appeal to those who will be wearing the welder as part of their USCM gear. But for those whose armor is for display only, I wonder if a floppy version would be closer to screen-accurate?

Well... Since I demonstrated, somewhat obnoxiously, in Spat's thread that I was unaware SA welders don't have QR clips, I went and looked at the movie (extended version).
I dunno if this makes any difference. I'm just chucking it around to see what people think.

Hicks was of course the main source.
His dangles (fnar fnar) from the belt mostly. IIRC, someone said from being tied to him with a bit of string.
However, in the scene where he gives Ripley the Pulsemeter, he seemingly just slides it back onto his belt, suggesting some kind of clip like a bigger version of the ones on the side of a Minilite. Maybe he has a string loop that it clips to?

Then, when Burke runs from the firefight and locks the door, he just plucks it off his belt. Somewhere around this point, there's a shot of Hicks's left side and the welder looks to be clipped to one of his armour straps, under his arm but clearly higher than his belt.


Also, in the Extended Version there's a scene where Hudson picks up the hamster on his MT. As he and Vas locate the room, Hudson crosses between her and the camera. Just as he reaches the right side of the door, Vas's lamp shines briefly on his waist and you clearly see his welder.
It looks to me to be hung off his belt by a 1/2" wide strap, maybe like a 58 Webbing Yoke strap.


Based on that, I get the impression that the Welders have a clip on one side (maybe left).
In it's simplest form, I imagine it'd be something like this;

However, if this does become something I do for my kit, I think Spat's clip would be more secure.

Interesting analysis, Ttaskmaster. Thank you. I'll have to watch the film again and focus on the moments you identified.

As others have pointed out, it seems that there were various different ways of wearing the welders, and in some instances a prop guy simply handed the welder to the actor when it was needed. On Harry's site there is a shot showing the welder hanging from Biehn's belt by what looks like a long loop of cord.

The screenshot below shows Hicks taking cover from the crashing dropship. You can see his welder flopping out to the side. It's not entirely clear, but the silhouette suggests that in this shot the welder may have been attached to a strap connected to Biehn's belt, much like the system Chris/FNG devised for his model.



In the shot above, you can also see Hicks's shoulder lamp flying off. A moment later it is magically back in place on his armor.

I don't have immediate access to my DVD, but will watch this scene again, as well as those Ttaskmaster pointed out, and try to get more definitive information.

I don't have my copy of the movie with me either, but if you look at some of the scenes in the
colony control room, you can see the welder hanging from Hicks' belt. You should be able
to grab a couple good screen shots there.
