The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

So while putting my kit together for DCon I figure a "repair kit" may come in handy.

Throwing one together I got so far.

5 min epoxy
Glue gun
Glue sticks
Pop rivets and gun
Super glue

any other ideas?

Needle and thread!

No joke- I make sure I always bring that ever since I first needed it in '06!

And duct tape! 8)

Tape all types. No telling what kinda oops will happen. You can also use it to support while the glue/epoxy sets. I am also including velcro, clothes hangers, and wire in mine. Flying so anything more would be a no no.

Thanks!

I second those BIG TIME! I've needed BOTH every year for the past three years.

Something always seems to need sewing or taping.

I second the paint (spray or otherwise) for touch-up on your props. Some newspaper to lay down under your painting surface is also advisable. (What are YOU laughing at, Kevin? )

Also, you might laugh at this one, but... MIGHTY PUTTY. Stop at a Target somewhere and pick up a box of that TV Info-mercial "Mighty Putty" stuff. I honestly didn't expect this stuff to work at all seeing as how it's one of Billy Mays' commercials, but I bought some out of curiosity and it's amazing.

It's pretty easy to work with, molds like clay, and dries as hard as concrete. If you have any catastrophic wardrobe malfunctions, like a PR falls off a table and cracks or something, this stuff could have you back in the game the next morning.

Anyone know if we have something like that up here? I've used Polyfilla for oddball things- but this Mighty Putty stuff sounds promising.

It's great that some of you US guys will be bringing tools & repair equipment - I hope you can help us UKCM boys out of necessary!

I was planning on bringing basic things like a Sharpie, some tape and a screwdriver (for my lamp fixing) but it's a bit risky travelling from the UK with glue & paint and stuff like that.

Indeed. I wouldn't think of flying with that stuff. And I'm sure any of us would help out in a heartbeat if need be!

Mighty Putty is just the same/just their brand name of milliput and 2 part marine putty right? If so you can find it in the adhesive & paint/bondo sections at Wally World or Autozone. Mighty Putty is a great deal "Because when you order you get 6 for the price of 2".

Thanks!

My experience with epoxy is limited to 5-minute and "JB Weld" (which is some AMAZING stuff itself) so I can't really compare Mighty Putty with anything else. It has a kind of doughy feel to it and tends to crumble just a little bit as you're first mixing it - does that ring any bells to any of you?

And I would never buy anything off one of those "But wait, THERE'S MORE!" ads, haha. I figured if it actually managed to make it to the shelves of a department store, it might be worth ten or twenty bucks and it turns out it was. I'm already almost done with one of the three tubes that came in the box, between the gun and the headset, and I keep finding new uses for it. I love it.

Mighty Putty is just plumbers putty.
It's a 2 part epoxy that comes in a stick form that you cut off a piece and knead till mixed.
There is 5 minute and 20 minute.

If you really want something strong than there is one with steel in it.

I usually get mine at Lowes.
Don't get the marine one it stays rubbery and peels off.

Being a bit thick here but is it a problem flying with glue?

I weas going to put a 5 min epoxy resin and a tube of super glue in with my repair kit.

It's in a sealed plastic container.

Will that be a problem??

Are the glues likely to split / explode?

Cheers,

Andy

You might have problems Andy because they might class it as a hazard - the two components of the epoxy glue produce heat while setting which could be a no-no.

With regards to the Superglue I knocked over a whole jar of the stuff once and it nearly caught fire while it was setting!

I wouldn't risk it. :)
