Post subject: | Brown Bess Paint Question |
I actually found a tin of Brown Bess, but most of the "liquid" was gone. I stirred it up and it's now like playdoh. What can I add to get it back to a liquid without changing the color? Thanks |

Paint thinners, White Spirit, Turpentine Substitute. Might still get some proper humbrol stuff somewhere. Apply sparingly and stir thoroughly. SAS |

Hey Rob, I suppose thinning the paint would be the solution? You generally thin paint for airbrushing in low pressure sprayers so in theory you're thinning a paint thats actually like 'playdoh' down to something more manageable like it originally was!! There's two ways to do this and will vary massively on one question - is the paint oil-based or water-based product like latex, vinyl, PVA etcetera... If it's latex (acrylic, vinyl, pva, vinyl-acrylic blend), thin with water at a rate of up to 1 pint water per gallon of latex. If you're using an oil-based product, use mineral spirits or naptha (sometimes called benzine or v.m.& p. naptha) at 1/2 pint per gallon of paint. Obviously the age of the paint may be a big factor whether this works at all. So use a small measured amount to test first. From my experience: use Humbrol thinner only! I don't know why, but every time I used other thinners (like Revell,..) with Humbrol colors it initially worked ok, but after a few days the paint started to clump and get downright nasty. Cheers, Stefan |

If you can find it, use the Humbrol thinner... This will let you keep the paint longer. If the paint is water based then add a few drops of alcohol after you have it thinned, this will let it flow better when painting. I have some water based paints that are more than 10 years old and they are still good. After it is thinned and stired real good ( not shaken ) you might have to strain it to pick out a few lumps. |
