The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Man, personally the APC under construction looks more beast than the one in the film.

Glad to see you finally got the pics scanned or something Steve :)

That second pic doesn't load properly though when I click on it. Only a small part of it open in the other window. Is it just me?

Cheers

Darren

Wow I always thought the picture that everyone uses for 'an airport tug' was wrong as it seemed short and the front was too square. Nice bit of work there Jonesy! The blueprints also clearly show where the tiny piece of interior would go on the right side.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site, but it has proved a to be a great source of information.
It's been great to read all the information and history on the M577 APC, as i have been looking to make one for the last two years.
But, rather than use a airport tug, I'm using a set of airport tug wheels that I already have, that look perfect and was planning on using a rear engined minibus (something like a Optare SOLO) as a doner vehilce. If there engine can be mounted between the rear wheels and a space frame chassis made to mount the front axle it would create enough room to create a full size interior.

I was just planning to make one for a laugh, as I love the film and I build lorry bodies for a living and the fabrication would be easy. I thought that a road legal APC would make a good themed limo or something. But if I was to build one, do you think there is enough aliens fans out there to use it for promotional events?

Cheers

It's just taken me ten minutes to find out what the dragon con parade is?
but that is the sort of thing i thought of using it for, although i would be interested to see how much it would cost to ship something that size to america? and I don't know how the american police would view a british registered vehicle that looked like and M577?
Although I have seen someone riding a BatPod on the US streets, so it might be a possibility?
I'm looking to start making it this winter between my customers lorries, so I can't imagine it being finished until 2012.
I've got so many parts that I have held onto that would work for building an APC I just don't think i'm gonna be happy until I build a replica!

If you are building it in the UK and you can drive it to big events such as those held in London (and other cities across the UK) I think you would easily get a lot of Marines wanting to ride on it... they would literally jump on the bandwagon, that's my guess!
I don't want to speak for the marines around here because I'm not one of them but something like a real Aliens APC would be THE main attraction to those events.

Putting the engine on the back would allow more space internally. Would you attempt a close-enough enteriors?

Is there an S in Yes?! Holy crap, you'll be fighting them off!
Tell us where you are. I'm sure there are plenty, including myself, who would be eager to lend a hand in the contruction if you needed any help.

I'm in the east midlands, 5 mins from junction 29 of the M1. Once i've got the doner vehicle sorted and the rolling chassis done, I'll begin to post some pictures and see if people want to come over to get involved. My overall plan is to see if a simple chassis can be made on a easy doner vehicle. If it doesn't take too long, I may begin to fabricate and sell them, something like the bat mobile replicas you see being sold. I'd rather be building replica APC's that building horse boxes for a living like i am at the moment!

since this thread re-surfaced, this makes me wonder what happened to the original APC after filming? was it dismantled and junked? or does some vehicle collector have it somewhere?

I thought the original one was just the airport tug loaned to the production and dressed up to look the part. Once filming was over it was sent back to the airport. Shame, as it would have made a good museum piece.
But, with more modern powerful diesel engines which as smaller in size, the idea that I have planned will be a lot better than a dressed up tug! I want to build one that you can actually fit six or eight people in!

As I'm pretty sure was mentioned in the previous threads, they had to remove a lot of weight from the original tug, basically gutting the thing and replacing many outer and inner parts, so I doubt that they then rebuilt it back to normal, but nobody knows for definite. :|
