The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I know this is one of those topics that pops up from time-to-time so im sorry to rear it's ugly head again. However the following picture puzzles me. I've been told that the rifles in the film had a BB shroud, not OD. However the picture (taken from the alienscollection.com picture archive, PR 'delta') shows a rifle that's been repainted for alien 3. The paint below the black is clearly OD, not BB. There's not even a hint of brown.

Am i missing something ?

I believe the missing piece of this puzzle is the rental market that occured between Aliens and Alien 3. When the weapons were returned to the company that made them after filming Aliens, the ones that were not stripped back down to core parts were rented out. I don't recall where I read this, but the brown bess was not a pupular color for the 'renters' as it did not "look military enough" so they were repainted before being rented out.

Then for Alien 3 they were just painted black over the top. Some time after that they were 'restored' yet again to get the black off. This is why the absolute "kicked to crap" look can't be trusted for "screen used" pulses. Sure they were weathered in Aliens, but the 'trashed' you see now in most present screen used pulses are a result of all the flip flopping of paint jobs, not an actual representation of what was used in Aliens :)

There's a video on YouTube with 'a' pulse rifle (could the one in the picture above but I don't know) and a guy from the propstore explaining how they got one from aliens, it got painted, then repainted for alien3.
He actually points out all three colours by showing a scratch.

I can't get the link as I'm on my iPod but a quick search and you'll find it. :)

The Screen-Used colour, yes.
However, it appears OD on screen (which I personally refer to as Screen-Accurate, rather than SU).

I prefer the brown/coyote/tan colour...once I applied the black paint wash to the shroud and mag well, it really turned into a super cool colour.

You can also get the Krylon camouflage spray paint, in the light brown colour. That's what I used, with the wash.
