The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Yo, could use everyone's help here on a licensed project. Feel free to take a look at the following image:

www.alienscollection.com/dropship.pdf

and offer up new names and suggestions for things - and perhaps we can stay consistent with some of what's been done before, but we don't have to stay married to the tech manual or anything. Feel free to post any and suggestions here.

We're also MAY be looking for someone to create a small little schematic of the side, front and top elevations - kind of like the Halcyon kit instructions - this would be printed in the lower right corner of the poster - along with the various logos as well...

Thanks everyone...

Willie I'm not really sure just what the project IS, could you tell us a little more?

EDIT: Ahh, you want names for stuff, right?

Thanks!

Harry

Yes, sorry, it's for a licensed print that will be distributed by a collectibles company.

Tks!

If I could chime my two cents in, the "gun sight" is pointing to the pilot's console. Shouldn't it be on the Weapons Officer's in the rear seat?

Arse about face, surely? The gunner should be in the front I would have thought?

The gunner should be if you follow conventional real world gunship seating a la the Apache. MI-24 and Cobra that incorporate such a layout, but the 'Aliens ' dropship had Ferro the pilot in front with Spunkmeyer the WO sat behind

Chris

Sidenote - took one look at it and thought it was for a Doring Kindersley book  until I read Willie's comment about it being a poster

Just looking at the 'chin mounted machine gun ammunition drive feed bit'.

Wouldn't the weapon better be described as a minigun or gatling gun due to it having multiple barrels? Just a thought.

Yeah, that's my job.

Q. Are we sure the engines are nuclear-powered?

I'd have thought four 'future jet engines' would have been the more logical design, like the Harrier VTOL.

Obviously there's no technical information about the dropships in the movie, but according to the EU they're "Variable-Intake Ramjet" engines. The idea is that the inlet spike moves in or out to switch the engine between atmospheric and spaceflight modes. In space, it functions along the principles of a rocket; during descent, it uses the high airspeed to operate as a Ramjet, and during normal atmospheric flight it works like a regular jet engine.

Guided Missiles :

Just a few 'literally right off the top of my head' ideas:

DGM-63 Guided Missiles ( DGM - Dropship Guided Missile ) 63 - count the letters alpha numerically in Aliens Legacy and you get 60 and 53 - take first number of each 63.

Or maybe AL-63 guided missiles?

Hey you cant knock a tryer :P

Hmm

Unguided missiles:

HH86 Mk2 or WG86 Mk2 Unguided Rockets

Initials from a couple of well known members of this board and the Aliens community ( yeah sorry tis a bit cheesy I know ), 86 to designate the year a certain film was released and Mk2 to designate the second film in a certain series

Just random stuff - just thinking has there even been any EU designations for the various weapons in comics or novels etc?

:xeno:

Chris

Yeah, in the Tech Manual. There's diagrams of how it operates, too.

I was under the impression that the Sentry Gun were recovered from the APC not in an obscure roof compartment that you would need a ladder to get to or to stand on top of the APC (if loaded onto the Drop ship) to get to.

Maybe I too am just being picky but many of the items pointed out just seem redundant to label or don't make much sense at all.

I spoke with this gentleman 2 years ago at D*Con and he was talking about this as well as a poster.

As for details...I know a lot of the missiles were named in the TM....but are you wanting to copy those specifics or go fresh?

Here is an OLD website did on it...

This is what I was looking for - the proper names of the missiles identified and labeled according to the tech manual:

I think Mike came up with this schematic, so thanks Mr. Rush!

If you want all the exact weapon designations a la the TM, I'm sure any of us can crack it open for you.

I have the details listed on the site I posted.

Taken directly from the TM back in 1999.
