As you're aware, I have a deactivated parts M41A PR - how often should I strip it down and oil in order to prevent rust? :shock:

Do I need to bother? Anything I shouldn't touch?

Just going off what I know about normal gun maintenance, the only strip-and-clean you really need to do is for a gun that's actually being fired. I would suggest "Tetra Gun" products, it's what my dad and I use.

Break her down once and rub some Tetra Gun grease into any moving parts (i.e. slide tracks, bolts, and actions of any parts you plan on racking). Get a good bit on there and rub it in to get it into the pores of the metal, to prevent wear. Aside from that, if you're worried about rust you can treat your real-steel parts with any kind of gun lube like Tetra Gun, or Rem-Oil, or any product that says "long term storage" or rust-preventative on the can.

Since your PR really doesn't get any kind of regular use, you shouldn't need much reapplication at all, if any.

An amendment to my first reply - the Tetra grease is very much harmless, but any spray lubricant for guns you use may have solvents in it. Check product labels to make sure they won't eat any plastic or resin parts in your PR; you should be fine as long as you aren't using a heavy solvent, but better safe than sorry. When in doubt, just dab a bit on a hidden or internal plastic part and check it for damage a day later.

If you live in a humid environment, I would wipe the metal down with some quality gun oil. I don't know if your PR replica is painted, blued or parkerized ... but any weapon needs some sort of periodic inspection, and light lubrication to keep from rusting.

I generally just wipe my duty weapons and personal stuff down with a a slightly oily rag (gun oiled) to prevent corrosion. If you can, and it won't eat your resin/plastic - CLP works really well. I have used that on my AR-15s for a long time, and it works well on handguns.

Tetra Gun Grease ROCKS. I use it on my duty weapons to keep them lubricated, and not dripping oils that collect dust. Its teflon impregnated. Rem-Oil does not do too well as a long term protectant in my experience. Hoppes Gun Oil (Not solvent) does all right. Its basically just sewing machine oil.

My PR is 12 years old with no rust. I wouldnt worry about it if you store it at room temp.

Can't believe I forgot to mention that. This is something I do with my own firearms and it's great at keeping out moisture during storage.
