OK, you can buy a birthday card for less than $5 that plays sound effects when opened.
How hard would it be to get a PR or motion tracker sound effect on one of these little chips.
Has anyone looked into this yet?

Wife works in a high grade kids toy store and they sell the sound chips where you can record your own voice (or anything that will play) but they are too thick for a birthday card.

$8 I think they are and they're about 1" in diamater and 1/3 inch deep.

Would the sound chip for one of those $5 birthday cards be loud enough?

I bought a kids toy to add sound effects for my PIG back in 06. It was a "Spy Sound Trap". Basically a record/playback device.

In a quiet room by myself it seemed nice and loud, but at D-Con with the hustle and bustle you could barely hear it.

My $150 hyperdyne sound/light kit did not stand up to dcon either.
The tech is there. Who is the expert here on sound?

It is definately doable but volume is going to be our biggest obstacle.

You could buy an old iPod on EBay to play the sound for cheep. My point is that the technology is getting cheaper.
How hard would it be to put the PR or MT sound on some kind of small device with a button and speaker so it could be put in a PR.
I also tried a Radio Shack recorder years ago, but it just didn't sound good. I bought the hyperdyne for my last PR, but their should be other options.

Back in the day, when those birthday cards first came out (mid 80's) 2600 magazine had an article on using similar devices as a "black box" for hacking phone systems (basically record quarter drop tones and play them back through the earpice for free calls) They used a small recordable chip from Radio Shack as well. I'm sure the problem is less with the storage and playback and more with the size of the speaker you are using, and the power it takes to drive a decent speaker. Where would you mount an inobtrusive speaker on the PR? Otherwise you could buy a small digital recorder and use the line out- the recorders are about the size of a pack of gum and would fit in the magazine well no problem.

Going off Stephen210's SG rig........he has the tiny sound board in the gun itself with the rather large speaker in the ammo drum.

As for the PR I'm sure the electronics can be placed somewhere but if you'd want the loud sound you'd need an amp with speaker.
Smallest one with decent sound I have is still too big to fit anywhere....unless you gutted the amp and speaker and spread it out. But then you have a big hollow PR full of wires etc.

How did they work it in Alien War?
I forget if it was onboard sound or just sensors with the sound being external.

Sound in Alien War was external, triggered by the weapons the actors were carrying. Or so I've been told.

As for the SG sound rig, I'm doing the same thing with mine. Tim Shilling at Asp Engineering (http://www.aspeng.com) has a Pulse Rifle board similar to the one Hyperdyne offered, and he's also got one for the smartgun that I helped him design. The ammo drum is where I'm planning on hiding my amp and speaker, too.

Like others said, I think the problem is mostly amp and speaker; recording a sound onto a chip is no big deal, but making it loud enough to stand up to a con is the hard part.

Hello newbie here !!!
Why not go at this at a different angle and use wireless ?
Hook up a wireless transmitter to the trigger and have the sound efx box with speaker on your belt inside a uscm pouch.
When you pull the trigger the sound will work. no one will be close enough to tell the difference.

Just a thought :?

Interesting thought about the wireless, but my personal thinking is that I would want the sound to be coming from my weapon rather than my body. At a con like Dragon*Con, people are almost elbow to elbow and a person standing there looking at you can easily tell where the source of the sound is coming from.

The size of the PR, though, limits your options. I suppose one could sacrifice the ability to remove a magazine to make room down there for some of the electronics. As Sean mentioned, the smart gun has a little more room to play with.
