Any good ideas on weathering a flak vest (without spray paint)? I got one that looks like it was never worn. I don't wanna drag it behind the car for 20 miles either.

Wear it while doing an oil change on your car. While changing a tire?

Go shooting wearing it. Then clean your guns, throwing some gun oil on it along with loose carbon. Eat a pizza, slop some cheese on it, drink a 6 pack of beer, watch Aliens, drink more beer. Shoot at all the bugs with your EMPTY handguns, show off to your girl your cool vest, then sleep in it. Get up, go for a run (or brisk walk) for the sweat then stand in the rain. Let dry. Repeat if necessary.

Don't drag it behind anything for any amount of distance, that's just silly.

Wear it with a T-Shirt underneath and go hiking.

Or do what Mike told you.

Maybe use pastels, chalk, charcoal or graphite? You will probably have to "set" any one of these with hairspray or some other fixative. The moment this stuff gets wet, it will be all over the place.

I would use Dullcote instead of hairspray as it might look too shiny.

And I'm curious as to why you don't like spraypaint Gomi?

I'm more trying to fade it somewhat. I've thought about salt water (sweat simulator) and then leaving it out in the sun, but here in Seattle we don't get much sun this time of year.
I do like spraypaint, but I don't want something that is going to then wear off with use- of course, that use would then be causing natural fading and wear, but....I don't know. I want realistic, natural wear and tear. Maybe I'll go ride my scooter for a while in it. Someone used this before me for race training, but it sure doesn't look (or smell) like they sweated at all.

Splash some acid on it for realistic encounters with Aliens!

There's a thought.... I wonder what effect it would have on the fabric?

Hmmm...maybe I should just leave it lying around in an auto body shop. What with floating overspray, sanding dust, and UV lights for curing paint, it should be good to go in a week!

Anybody feel like posting some pics of your flak jacket? I have a 1979 model and have removed the rubber pads and velcro strips, but I'm thinking of putting in a zipper to make it just like an M69. I'd like to see some pics of the m69 layed out flat so I can see how the zipper is mounted.
thanks,

Go to your nearest fireplace, put the ashes in a trash bag throw your flak vest in, and shake it like a polaroid picture.

I've been wearing it around the house. Every day. My wife and kids think I'm crazy, but this thing is damn comfy with the padding still in it. Watching tv, lying in bed (no, I don't sleep in it *yet*) it really supports your head and neck. Did I mention I like a snug fit?
Anyway, I'd love to have a zipper closure instead of these lame ass velcro tabs that are the preliminary closure before the full "wide" velcro strip.
Funny thing is, I read something that said that the zipper was done away with by the military designers between the M69 and the 1979 designations in case someone was hit by something that would cause "melting". My bet is they were watching "Aliens" rather than worrying about a Molotov cocktail, right?
Anyway, I would still like to see some pics of one of these laid out flat so I could get a good detail shot of the way the zipper is installed.
thanks,

Would love to be able to help ya out but the only vest I got is the late 80's early 90's pattern kevlar we used in desert storm.
