Just wondering if anyone knows what method was used to paint the shrouds on the screen used PR's, airbrush or brush ?????

Im 99% done, couple of little odds and sods to finish including painting the shrouds, problem is, i sold my airbrush and compressor to go towards paying for this build, now i cant paint the bloody thing so im contenplating brush painting them with Humbrol BB.

Ive tried getting good ol BB matched in a rattle can but havent had any luck there as it seems there phasing out acrylic for a water bassed RAL system typical.

well for my pr i used an airbrush. turned out very smooth and even, certanly much better than my pr that i brushed on the paint. but for screen accuracy i dunno mate.

They wouldn't have been brush painted, the originals I've seen definitely look airbrushed.

Stonedog I'd try to borrow an airbrush if you can, or ask someone else to airbrush your shrouds. Brush painting would definitely leave brush marks.

Ok thanks, might be worth buying a basic airbrush and a couple of tins of air, might as well do it right, save all that trying to get the paint off when im not happy with all the brushstrokes

I'd do it with those big brush machines they use to clean the ice at a hockey game... Zamboni!

Or... perhaps an airbrush.

Some locations that do auto repair and paint matching might even be able to color match the paint for you, and put it in a rattle can.

I believe Hyperdyne did it a couple years ago and offered a short run of it.

I don't know anyone personally who's done it since, but some of the better guitar painters do it that way with matched colors and automotive paint.

I haven't done it myself, so I can't quote pricing for you. Sorry!

I get my paint matched to the G+P kit at Finishmaster.

They are a auto body supplier in the US.

A quart is around 35-40 bucks, but that will last awhile
since it is mixed 50-50 with a reducer (UR40)
So I think of it as 2 quarts.

I spray my stuff with an HVLP spray gun.


I don't recommend brushing it on after all your hard work.

I'm sure you can find someone to help.

thought id post up a super close-up shot of my pr shroud to show how airbrushing it looks. i used this cheap airbrush.......


and bb colour matched vinyl paint. here is the result....

Stonedog, I live on the Surrey/Kent/London border, and I have an airbrush (well, a few!) and a compressor.

...have just mixed up paints for me, based on the Tamiya equivalents of each of the Humbrol original colours.

So what are the Tamiya equivalents? as i have a loads of tamiya paints...might have the right colour laying around, so i will not have to buy loads...

prob got most of those paints laying around.....though no match for Brown bess....

i will have to colour match my gear with someone at NSC just to compare.... see if the paint i'm using at the mo is close or not

Theres some called Aervo (sp) Earth tone thats VERRERERERERRY close to Brown Bess...I believe DSB mentioned it before...

Aervoe Camouflage Paint 999 Earth Brown, ive searched but its not available here in the UK, it is VERY close to BB in a side by side comparison, i even contacted an auto paint shop in the US to get some shipped surface mail (wont ship by air) but they came back to me saying it would have to go air at some stage ????

Just got off the phone from these people, they said they could match BB from a sample if i send them one and mix it in a spray can in matt acrylic will let you know.
