The problem with is is the fact that the pattern doesn't "fool" NV into thinking it's not seeing anything, which is what the new digital camo does. The pattern of blocks gives off an analagous (sp?) signal, that makes nigh vision discard parts of the image it perceives.

Against the naked eye, multi-cam works GREAT. Against NV, not so much. That was the reason the military didn't select it in the field trials.

Of course, if you're playing airsoft in the daylight, it will work just fine.

It's a similar situation with the camo I'm wearing in my avatar.

All issue british DPM kit is Infrared Reflective (IRR) so when viewed in the near infrared spectrum, as with a night sight, the colours of the pattern match to their real world equivalent. The green reflects IR and becomes "white" like leaves and foliage. Black absorbs IR and stays "black", etc.
Non IRR fabric will loose the pattern when viewed in IR since the dies used to make the colours often only work in the visible spectrum.
For example I have a black t-shirt that reflects infrared and so appears "white" in IR.
I also have a patterned throw on my sofa which is black with bands of white, red, yellow and blue but again in IR it's all "white".

Theres something top be said for the British DPM afterall!

You always get all these folks buying the newest kit and declaring DPM to be old and useless.

Its good to see a good solid argument for why DPM still pulls its weight.

It's a good pattern.
In a fairly recent in-depth comparison of various camouflage patterns, British Temperate DPM came up tops.
I'd imagine the Dutch did well too since they based their pattern on ours with only a tiny modification.

It's versatility make it suitable for a range of terrain.
The important thing to remember is that the uniform is only a base layer. To properly camouflage yourself you must add local foliage. It's not simply enough to wear camo and expect to dissapear.

It's certainly better than Safariflage as far as a USCM impression goes (that is what you're asking yes?).

Just to get picky, the movie BDUs had no black or green in them- but again, the Multi-Cam would look good under a set of armour!

I've actually heard that the U.S. Army is going to be changing over to multi-cam in the year 2010.

But they've just spent all that money on developing ACU's... surely they won't go throwing more money...Oh, wait this is the US army we're talking about...

The Airforce just rolled out their new digital tigerstripe uniform to replace the universally hated "Blue Tigerstripe" that just finished testing.

It doesn't look too bad really.

For some reason I was picturing a t-shirt with a take off of the "I'm the Juggernaught B!tch" comment floating around.

I like the Multicam, I heard rumors of the US Army re-considering it as a choice over the ACU....I'm not holding my breath though...

Round here if you wear ACU out in the woods you stand out to an almost comically garish extreme. Not an opinionated slight mind you, it's a fact. It is a fine desert and dusty urban camo but in deep green foliage it's pants.
My currently serving buddies call it Ghost Camo...not because you disappear like a phantom, but because you appear bright and luminous in the forest...

As an aside I have been a long time fan of DPM and it is the official camo pattern of the Matsucorp Security Forces. Round these parts it's really the only logical choice...Green, green everywhere, we got trees on all five sides of us, it's bloody nature trek every time you step out the door! Only in the fall and winter months do we switch to German oak leaf...It's ironic to think that a pattern introduced over 60 years ago is every bit as valid today...and yet they still struggle with new designs.

I was under the impression that the ACU's are more or less designed to work against low-light and night vision optics, but I find it hard to believe that these items are commonplace with Islamist extremists and insurgents. Even the store-bought variety.
